Following the death of his mother in 1888, a depressed Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) decided to take a trip to his favorite destination, North Africa, travelling to Ceylon, then to Alexandria and Cairo over the period of several months. While he was in Egypt, he composed his fantasia for piano and orchestra, AFRICA, Op. 89. Dedicated to pianist Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos, it premiered on October 25, 1891, with the dedicatee playing the solo, and the work was an immediate success both at the premiere and after, which pleased Saint-Saëns a great deal to the point that he considered AFRICA a signature work. Borrowing themes and techniques from North African music, the fantasy draws on material he heard in Algeria and Egypt, offering an exotic sound to those listening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This concertante is notable also as one of the first works to be recorded with the composer as soloist, with a surviving 1904 recording with Saint-Saëns at the piano. Inspired by the release of Nelson Mandela in the early 1990s, Hymn for Africa pays tribute to the sense of dignity and peace that he brought not only to South Africa, but around the entire globe. As the beautifully lush chorale unfolds, quietly undulating drums murmur in the distance and gradually build into a rousing climax.Hymn for Africa was written as part of a project known as Brass Band Aid. When I was asked to compose a piece with relevance to Africa for the project, I began to think of all the things that I associate with Africa. I have vivid memories from my childhood of the hard-hitting news reports from the famines of the early/mid 1980's (and the concerts that followed). I also associate Africa with amazing animal life - the many species from snakes to birds to lions, with their many colours. But more than these associations, there is one memory that stands out amongst all others. The release of Nelson Mandela in the early 1990's had a profound effect not only in South Africa, but all over the continent of Africa, as well as the World as a whole. The fact that one man can achieve this with peace and great dignity will always be an inspiration, not only to me, but many, many millions of humans around the globe. Hymn for Africa is inspired by this sense of dignity and peace. A simple eight bar melody is the basis of the composition. A drone is then added, before a chorale, and finally a rousing climax when the percussion and full band enter. The piece dedicated to Bob and Briony Thompson in admiration.

This work in four sections is written for a four-part variable instrumentation together with drums. We start off_x001E_ in the _x001F_first movement on an adventurous safari. In the second and third movements weâ??re on the hunt for great beasts of Africa, which can also be heard with all their stomping, screeching and yelling. A wonderful musical safari that all musicians and listeners alike will enjoy! Dit werk voor vierstemmige variabele bezetting met slagwerk beschrijft in vier deeltjes verschillende taferelen van het Afrikaanse continent. In het eerste deel gaan we op safari. In het tweede deel gaan we op zoek naar een olifant, een neushoorn, een luipaard een leeuw en een buffel. Welke reptielen kunnen we ontdekken in het derde deel? En hoe kan het beter stoppen dan met een â??Monkey Rockâ??? Tijdens het werk kun je actief verschillende dierengeluiden nabootsen, waardoor je je echt in de jungle waant!Dieses vierteilige Werk ist für eine vierstimmig variable Besetzung und Schlagzeug instrumentiert. Le climat du troisième mouvement donne un peu la chair de poule alors que nous rencontrons toutes sortes de reptiles dangereux.
