For the most part, this is a straightforward setting of the familiar nettleton hymn tune—the choirs sing some unison, the assembly sings along on some verses, and there is a descant, as well as an a cappella third verse. But the harmonies, particularly on that third verse, are refreshing. And the fanfare for trumpet, with a toccata-like organ accompaniment, provides a fitting beginning and end to the piece.

Reprint of the first edition. Friedrich Spitta recommended to Herzogenberg that he set Gerhard Tersteegen's text Gott ist Gegenwartig on the occasion of that poet's 200th birthday. Besides the obbligato organ, Herzogenberg restricted the instrumentation to strings, two trumpets, three trombones and timpani, and thus achieved a majestic quality which corresponds to the text. Score available separately - see item CA.2300100.

One of the great hymns by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Hart Morris has arranged it for SATB choir and organ. Sure to be a favorite on All Saints Sunday and services honoring those in missions, the congregation is invited to join in the final stanza. The hymntune remains firmly intact in this arrangement, while the harmony provides creative pleasure and celebration.
