Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3124300.

The two Magnificat settings (C major, ZWV 107; D major, ZWV 108) are amongst well over 30 psalm and Magnificat settings by Zelenka for Vespers services in Dresden. In contrast to the work in C major, where a soprano solo dominates over long passages, the choir has a more prominent part in this Magnificat in D major. Zelenka also heightened the festive character of the work by later adding parts for 2 trumpets and timpani. Authentic performances of the work are therefore possible with and without trumpets. Score available separately - see item CA.4006300.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.7005300.

Georg Philipp Telemann has long been perceived as a composer of sacred music, and particularly of the German-language church cantata. However, in the course of his long life he also composed church works setting Latin texts. In addition to works for smaller ensembles there is presently only one larger psalm setting, Deus judicium tuum, that is available in a new edition. This is now joined by the first ever scholarly, critical edition of his Magnificat in C major. Telemann probably composed this impressive work for the dedication of the organ in the Leipzig Neukirche in 1704. Like Bach's well-known Magnificat, it is scored for three trumpets and timpani. For ambitious church choirs, the work is really worthwhile, and is also a most effective piece for audiences to enjoy. Score available separately - see item CA.3914300.
