Home on the Range is gebaseerd op een gedicht (‘My Western Home’ uit 1872) van Brewster Higley, een arts uit Indiana die een jaar daarvoor een stukje land had gekocht in Kansas. Vervolgens schreef Dean Kelley er een melodie bij -het nieuwe lied werd al snel geliefd onder migranten in de Verenigde Staten. In Letter from Home, Philip Sparke has aimed aim to capture the emotions that can be experienced when away from home; a letter or phone call can bring both happy and sad emotions and music is perhaps unique in being able to express these subtle and paradoxical feelings. The calm opening leads to a reflective melody on clarinets and saxophones; but it is not long before the peaceful mood turns to turmoil, which eventually brings feelings of resignation in a calm chorale with a more positive mood.

Antonin Dvorak first premiered his New World Symphony at Carnegie Hall in December of 1893 with the goal to bring American musical sensibility to European classical music. The second movement, labeled Largo, contained the melody that would later be identified as Goin’ Home. This well-crafted adaptation of that beautiful melody for concert band contains all the elements of the original orchestral version that has moved orchestral concert patrons for over a century.
