This composition was commissioned in 2015 by the City of Fairfax Band and was premiered by that ensemble incollaboration with the Fairfax Choral Society on December 19 th of that year, under the baton of Robert J. Pouliot. The work was originally scored for symphonic wind ensemble and SATB chorus and has subsequently been transcribed for use in an orchestral/choral platform with the same voicing. (3.3.3.3, 4.3.3.1, timp. 3 perc., harp & strings).
The work is a setting of two Catholic liturgical texts traditionally associated with the season of Advent: Hodie, Christus Natus Est and O Magnum Mysterium. The work is a traditional arch-form in onemovement, a setting of the more reflective O Magnum Mysterium text being framed by a more ebullient and assertive treatment of the Hodie, Christus Natus Est text. There are passages of declamatory and angular rhythmic statements throughout, interspersed with contrasting sections of broad lyricism and reflectiveness. The piece begins and ends with triumphant brass and choral textures. This work is suitable for any Christmas program, especially as an opening or closing number.
No vocal soloists are called for in the performance of this work.

Gounod's classic piece, arranged for double bass, with piano accompaniment. The music in the beginning tells the listener that two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organised and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time. The piece soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes.

The OperAria repertoire anthology was much applauded when it came on stage with three baritone volumes in 2015. The successful baritone debut was followed in 2017/18 by the appearance of the four soprano volumes, also conquering hearts in no time. Now, another performance: The curtain rises on the bass volumes, the foundation of the vocal family for heavier, darker voices, though nevertheless brilliant and full of radiance. The protagonists have such well-known names as Bartolo, Don Basilio, Colline, Don Pasquale, Falstaff, Figaro, Kecal, Osmin, Sarastro. Other heroes less often in the limelight, such as Dulcamara, Sancho Pansa, Phanuel, and Sir Morosus, can certainly also count on much applause. It is my aim to give students a modern, systematically structured, well-informed vocal coach that meets the demands of present-day stage practice. And, of course, a cohesive repertoire and logical presentation of audition arias for every vocal genre.(Peter Anton Ling)OperAria is the ideal vocal coach for all voice types. Edited by Peter Anton Ling, the books address all singers and are conceived above all for training and auditions. In addition, through their careful selection, they offer valuable inspiration for opera recitals. This work was originally scored for mixed chorus and symphonic wind ensemble, in 2005, for the opening of a new concert hall in Corpus Christi, Texas. The commissioning institution, Texas A & M University at Corpus Christi, asked one of their professors – Dr. Robb Jackson – to write a poem for the occasion and the result formed the basis used by the composer to create this new work. Since the academic institution in question is situated on the Texas coast the writer chose to fill his poem with sea imagery and musical metaphors related to shore-side living. This portrayed well the sense of an ocean-side artistic retreat – appropriate to the dedication of a new concert hall in a coastal community.

This composition was commissioned by the Fairfield University Glee Club of Fairfield, CT, and was created to help usher in, musically, the end of the old millennium and the start of the new one. The piece was premiered in the Spring of 2001, and the first performance was led by the then conductor of the ensemble, Carol Anne Maxwell.
The structure of the work is that of a brief choral symphony, with a strong melodic basis in the vocal parts and varied instrumental figuration in the accompaniment forces. Each of the 4 movements is quite unique in style and form, and could each be performed separately if the programming occasion warranted so doing.
The text is drawn from a number of sources, one for each of the 4 movements:1.Lao-Tsu2.Isaiah 58 (Holy Bible; paraphrased)3.St. Ignatius of Loyola4.Anonymous (from the Sanskrit)
The work is scored for brass quintet (2 tpt, hn, trbn & tuba), two percussion and organ, and the accompaniment package is available for purchase [RBM-207].

Ralph Sauer has transcribed six of Mendelssohn's many Songs Without Words for Tuba or Bass Trombone. Mendelssohn wrote eight volumes of songs for the Piano throughout his life. These pieces became popular immediately because of their beauty and technical accessibility. The Songs are mostly lyrical and of utmost beauty. Mr. Sauer has found a previously unmined resource and added immeasurably to the Tuba & Bass Trombone repertoire.

Casey at the Bat was commissioned in 2001 by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as a part of their Americana concert series from that season. The work is a colorful and highly descriptive narrative setting of the famous poem, “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, first published in an 1885 edition of The San Francisco Chronicle.(The poetry has been slightly paraphrased from the original to replace some arcane terminology.)This composition was conceived in a distinctly cartoonish style – reminiscent of the orchestral music so masterfully created by Carl Stalling and other great film score writers during the Golden Age of the animated short. In addition to brief quotes from Till Eulenspiegel of Richard Strauss, the melody from Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Tilzer-Norworth) is interpolated throughout the fabric of the piece (although the lyrics are never sung). The first performance of this work took place during the Spring of 2001, under the baton of Richard Kaufman and featuring Pat Sajak as narrator of the well-known poem.Audio excerpts from a matchless narrative performance of this piece by Shakespearean actor Sir Derek Jacobi (with the National Symphony of London and the composer conducting) are included below for perusal purposes. The full performance may be purchased as an audio file from Kodanja Records of Dallas, TX. ( dur: 8’ )
