Pachelbel’s Canon in D has become a staple in western music, especially when it comes to weddings. It’s a wonderful piece of music with exciting melodies that grow throughout the work. However, there is one major problem with this piece from the perspective of cello and bass players. Their part only contains a pattern of 8 notes that get repeated over and over and over. 28 times to be exact. To remedy this, composer Katie O’Hara LaBrie has created Pachelbel’s Rhapsody, a dream-like variation on Pachelbel’s original themes which allows for all parts of the orchestra to shine.

Travel back in time to 1775 and the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the tipping point for the American Revolutionary War. This fiery engagement is depicted with a slow, ominous introduction as soldiers gather to await the arrival of British forces. As the battle ensues, the music frantically portrays the struggle between the two sides and the percussion emulates the sound of canon bursts and rifles. An aggressive & historical tribute of significant merit!

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3114900.
