I have never had much to do with the accordion in my career up until now, although this instrument is at home in many different forms across the world. It is a great phenomenon how air can be turned into sounds as diverse as beeping, murmuring, chirping or wheezing - all very human forms of articulation. The rib cage fills itself with sounds and expels the air with more sounds. From this thought, my title emerged: Der ewige Atem [Eternal Breath]. Breathing in and out is a synonym for our human existence from birth up until our last moments the eternal cycle of living and dying provided the ultimate inspiration for the addition of this extended epilogue to my Ode an die Nacht [Ode to the Night]. The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen. Aurora Eclipsed was inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017.  During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. An aggressive composition younger students will enjoy playing over and over again.I wrote Aurora Eclipsed while looking outside at 2017’s solar eclipse. I find space and celestial bodies so fascinating. To think of how small we are compared to the scale of even just the moon is impressive.During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. About the work:Unlike most of my young-band pieces, Aurora Eclipsed begins at its peak tempo. The rhythmic pattern in m. 2 is repeated throughout the piece and is used in the melody in order to help facilitate the teaching of eighth-note patterns. The melodic pattern changes slightly at m. 25, while remaining just as repetitious as the previous pattern, giving everyone ample opportunity for exposure. At m. 25 the directions call for euphonium and bassoon only. This is merely a color choice and can easily be used with trombones to fill the need or to help strengthen your students' playing. The use of sfz is not used very much in this level of music, but I thought with the addition of the accents that it would be a great opportunity to teach this colorful effect.

This work was written with a mix between computer technology and the more traditional orchestra, the piece was composed in such a way that it would support its own acoustics. Lindberg worked with amplification of instruments and electronically transformed sounds thus producing greater possibilities to abandon acoustic limits. In order for the piece to be supported by it's own acoustics, the piece had to be written in terms of foreground and background harmony, every foreground chord would always have it's background, a shadow existing without it's main chord. Another theme to the piece is that of textural motion as rapid gestures and motions are a big part of the composer's interest. Static repitions seemed to limit the piece however so they were compensated for on another level, so with a repetitive rhythmic pattern, the harmonic material changes rapidly or when a chain of chords is static the rhythmic and timbral qualities vary frequently. Work for orchestra commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
