Béla Bartók often used musical material from his folk music collections for his compositions. His Sonatina, originally written for solo piano in 1915, was based on songs that he collected in Transylvania. The three movements (1. Bagpipers - Molto moderato, 2. Bear Dance - Moderato, and 3. Finale - Allegro vivace) were orchestrated by Bartók in 1931. Shortly before Bartók's orchestral transcription was finished, violinist Gertler Endre's transcript for violin and piano was completed. Gertler and Bartók knew each other personally and, in fact, first made each other's acquaintance as a result of their shared experience with their respective transcriptions.

The composer wrote this piece while still a third-year student at the Music Academy. The basis of it is a formula consisting of 9 notes, created by coding as notes a Christian name and various nicknames and anagrams. In the piece virtually every musical factor evolves in accordance with a predetermined system. It was first performed on March 20, 2002 in the small hall at the Music Academy by Dóra S k (cello), László Tömösközi (vibraphone) and Dániel Dinyés (prepared piano), with Balázs Futó conducting.

An ABRSM syllabus title, 2014-21, Grade 6. Although the recorder was a popular instrument in France at the beginning of the 18th century, relatively few original French pieces for recorder have survived. One reason for this is that the repertoire of the recorder players of that time was largely taken from the flute literature, the pieces being transposed a third higher because of the difference in pitch between the flute and the recorder. Six of the seven suites in this volume - works by Caix d.Hervelois, Dornel, Pierre Philidor, Hotteterre, Naudot and de la Barre - are indeed flute music transposed in accordance with the custom of the period, one suite, however, is an original work for recorder by Dieupart written for the B flat descant recorder and transposed for the C descant recorder in use today. In selecting the works our aim was to provide a stylistic panorama of the French music of the period, featuring the various types of suite.

The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.

In the string quartets published in the series 'Music for Beginners', every part can be played in the first position. When a viola is not available it may be replaced by a third violin: the part is provided in both alto and treble clef versions in this publication. The volume begins with the characteristic Viennese classical dances (contredanse, Ländler, minuet), which can be played even after just one or two years' of diligent instrumental study. These are followed by more extensive string quartets with several movements, which prepare students for playing more serious chamber music. The works are published in score form as well as parts, to make it easier to navigate among themusical material and to assist with the work of rehearsal.

The latest volume in the Leggiero series is a selection from Telemann?s enormous ?uvre, featuring movements that can be performed as independent pieces. Included among the generally fast dances taken from the suites (or ouvertures) are several slow movements from concertos or concerti grossi, so that the volume provides really varied material for youth orchestras or amateur musicians. For different occasions the performers can put together pairs or even suites of movements that are compatible in terms of their key and character.
