Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London.I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland)Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in.Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation.Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. Paul Hillier, 2012.

The Anglo-Saxon poem The Dream of the Rood was probably written in the 8th Century and is the earliest dream-vision poem in Old English. A fragment of the poem from the section that describes the crucifixion can be found carved on the Ruthwell Cross in Dumfriesshire, and set in stone at a time when Ruthwell was part of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. In responding to a commission for the Hilliard Ensemble, I was keen to find a dramatic text, but one that would also invite a musical response appropriate to the very nature of this kind of vocal quartet. Writing for the Hilliards together with a mixed instrumental ensemble, and for a generous cathedral acoustic, has had a strong influence on the types of textures and sonorities I have used. The structure of the work is dictated by the form of the poem, but the music could also be seen as consisting of a sequence of motets with both vocal and instrumental interludes.John Casken.

When some time ago I looked at works by the painter Egon Schiele whom I admire very much, I thought which paintings would have been painted by this artist, had he not died much too early. I envisioned the works he had never painted. Isn't it impressive with what modest means he achieves maximum emotional effect? It was this thought, too, that accompanied me during my work on this piece - though painting techniques cannot be directly reflected in the music, of course. Tatjana Komarova.

There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino. The movements are: Prelude: Peter John Connell: The Cheeky Chap Elegy: Mavis June Connell (Time To Remember) Rondo: Family Fun (Adrian Connell) Performance note The work can also be performed with accompaniment of string orchestra and harp using the set of parts for the version for clarinet and orchestra (E.D. 88833).

In Tampere, Finland, surprisingly many, relatively young and active composers with their own distinctive voice are making their mark. This would not be possible without Jouni Kaipainen, the grand old man of the Tampere scene. He was both a lecturer at the Tampere Music Academy and the composer-in-residence for the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a true Tampere culture person an inspiration to the younger generation. Jouni's passing was a moment of deep grief for all of us in Tampere - we are left with sadness and longing. Tommi Hyytinen commissioned a sonata for horn and piano from me at around that time, so I decided to dedicate the work in Jouni's memory. The work passes through different emotions and sections within the rather wide-arched sonata form. The final movement is very much in memoriam Jouni Kaipainen. This sonata continues my project to write sonatas for each solo instrument and piano.

The Italian hymns contained in this collection were composed during the years 1966-1968. They are based on texts of the so-called post-conciliar liturgy resulting from a reform dictated by the previously concluded Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. Due to this reform, national languages would now be permitted in several parts of the liturgy. Rota incorporated the last piece of this collection into the film score for Franco Zeffirelli's La bisbetica domata (The Taming of the Shrew).
