The word "hymn" comes from the Greek "hymnos", meaning a festive song. To hymnologists (people who study hymns), the HYMN is the poetry, the lyrics, which is then set to a HYMN TUNE. Many wonderful hymn tunes have been used over the centuries with several completely different sets of words. The name of a hymn tune seldom matches the name of its hymn, and most people refer to hymns by their poetic names rather than their tune names. However, some hymn tunes are so powerful, so flexible and so rooted in the collective social consciousness that they transcend whatever poetry is put with them. Several tunes in this set have been used for many poems, most of which are unfamilar. But we know the melody instantly! Written for two violins and piano, both a viola and cello part are include to substitue for the 2nd violin. Hymns (tunes) include: 1. All Glory, Laud and Honor (St. Theodulph), 2. Crown Him With Many Crowns (Diademata), 3. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Austria), 4. I Love to Tell the Story (Hankey), 5. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (St. Denio), 6. O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Axnon), 7. O Worship the King (Lyons), 8. Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty (Lobe Den Herren).

The final movement of the Sonata in A major KV 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Rondo Alla Turca, is one of the most famous pianopieces of all time. Once only familiar to musical experts, later a universal piece for all piano pupils, its opening melody is now even omnipresent as an alienated sinus tone-like mobile phone ring tone. Fazil Say's arrangement, originally created as an effective encore, follows on from this popularity. After the first eight bars havebeen presented in original form, typical elements of jazz superimposed on the still recognisable classical foundations can be discovered, such as syncopation of the top notes and ornamentation through chromatic blue notes, embedded in the at times frenzied chains of semiquavers. In the spirit of the work's improvisatory character, Say likes to perfom his Alla Turca Jazz in different combinations, for example accompanied by jazz singers of with orchestra. It may appear strange that Fazil Say, who was born in Turkey and - when not on tour - is still resident in that country, does not bring back Mozart's interpretation of genuine Turkish music closer to its own roots, particularly as many of his compositions such as Black Earth or the Violin Sonata are characterised by a subtle amalgamation of the Classical-Romantic tradition, Turkish folk music and elements of jazz. In a further Mozart arrangement, the ballet music Patara premiered in Vienna in 2006, composed on the basis of the Rococo-like theme from the first movement of the same A-major Sonata (wich enjoys almost as great popularity as the Alla Turca theme), Say utilised the connection which was absent in Alla Turca, albeit in the opposite direction. In the ballet music, the piano symbolises Western culture and the Ney flute Oriental culture, communcated atmosperically by austere percussion instrumentation and soprano vocalisation.

It's often a composer's experience that the idea planted in one piece may also germinate unexpectedly in another, which is how Gaslight Square II, a seven-minute scherzo for piano duet, grew from a brief study of boogie-woogie style in Gaslight Square1 for solo piano. So, in addition to this jazz-derived element that is developed and extended in the more ambitious piece, there's also a set of little canons shared between the players, and a wistful melody heard in the setting of haunting four-part counterpoint. Players of Grades 7 or 8 standard and above will find Gaslight Square II not only hugely enjoyable to play but also a valuable study in duet textures that require their interaction in a variety of characteristic ways. Duo Antithesis premiered Gaslight Square II at the Ruglander Wasserschlosse in Bavaria, Germany in July 2005, and the work has been broadcast on Bavarian Radio.

The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong, though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897, scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880's. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work, especially with the composer's fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit - and its partner, Chanson de Matin - at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet, but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Sincethen, other arrangements have been created.

The author of Argentinian Tango and Folk Tunes for Violin (ED 13379), Ros Stephen, presents a wide-ranging collection of Russian Tunes for violin. Highly flexible to use, the pieces may be performed by a solo violinist as violin duets. The music has been carefully edited to create authentic arrangements. Ornamentation, bowing and fingering have been included to enable stylistic performances, and there is also guidance on general style, as well as note on all of the individual tunes. Recordings of all tunes, performed by Ros Stephen, are available for free download.
