Well within the technical abilities of many amateur and semi-professional choirs, Cresswell's unaccompanied choral work The Belly of the Whale (1997) is a song about freedom and deliverance through the medium of its spiritual text. Initially spare and searching, in its second, faster section Cresswell adds a dose of contemporary harmony to the gospel tradition, at once oblique, unsettling and rousing. This is a rewarding repertoire choice for both a concert setting and church context.

In this vocal quartet for four female voices and piano, Schubert sets a text from the odes of Ewald Christian von Kleist to music, the first four stanzas of his 17-stanza poem hymn. According to tradition, Schubert had written it for the singer Anna Frohlich. It was first performed on 8 March 1827 in the Vienna Musical Society and published posthumously as op. 133 in 1839.
