A dramatic opening marked Moderato Maestoso announces the thematic material for Concert Dance and Intermezzo. The dramatic opening quickly ends and an Allegro begins with solo Latin percussion instruments. The Allegro winds its way through the material, and then it transitions to Andante Rubato; where a solo trumpet plays the secondary theme. Once the slower section has played out, the Allegro tempo returns with a solo by piccolo backed by the previous Latin percussion instruments. Several key changes and volume variances provide a transition to the original theme. Smith combines several of these themes and fragments together for an exciting conclusion.

The second solo work with band accompaniment was written for Doc Severinsen.. A rousing tarantella-type ostinato in 6/8 with plenty of Latin percussion opens the piece, which then gives way to a beautiful Adagio showing the lyricism of the soloist. A Da Capo brings us to the beginning, and then Smith challenges the soloist with a very difficult cadenza. The band accompaniment is straightforward, however the solo part is very advanced.

The first of two trumpet solos Smith wrote for Carl Doc Severinsen. If you have a trumpet player par excellence, then this piece is for your soloist and band. It begins with a dramatic opening followed by an Allegro. Smith then weaves in the blues for the soloist to play a wonderful lyric melody first, followed by an opportunity to adlib with the chord progression. The accompaniment is a grade 3.5, but the solo is most certainly a grade 6. Also available for trumpet solo and piano.

An exciting and energetic snare drum solo begins this composition with the woodwinds foreshadowing material soon to come and a brass introduction, which is concluded by a beautiful bassoon cadenza. Credence prominently features the percussion section, especially the snare drum and timpani. With plenty of time signature changes, Credence gives the educator an opportunity to explain non-functional major chords, polychords and chromaticism. A concert and contest favorite.

A quiet prelude begins this composition for three flutes and vibes accompanying the melody for alto sax. This melody is the basic building blocks for Prelude-Variations. An Allegro Vivo follows with variations on the original tune. The piece ends with original alto sax melody brought back with a harmonic ostinato in the brass and a captivating percussion pattern. The piece ends with the horns announcing the motive one last time. Be sure to put the horn bells up as they play the trill announcing a terrific climactic ending. An enjoyable challenge for your band!

Translated Sound of The Winds, Sonus Ventorum begins with a dramatic opening for full band. This gives way to an exciting Allegro with trombones and saxophones playing the ostinato.
