Carl Vine's Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind---the others being his first two piano sonatas. Vine describes it as a conscious and continuous tribute to the piano concerto as a medium and historical entity, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.

LES DJINNS was written at the request of pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, though César Franck's (1822-1890) short work for piano and orchestra was instead premiered on March 15, 1885 by Louis Diémer with the Société Nationale de Musique. The piece is inspired by the poem of the same name in Victor Hugo's LES ORIENTALES, as Franck represents the idea of the mysterious and supernatural forces tearing the nocturnal sky through their passage. Franck was impressed with the virtuosic playing and interpretation of Diémer in this difficult work, which sparked a renewed interest in the piano for the composer. Contemplation is the first movement from the Clarinet Concerto by Jan Van der Roost, which was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF, Belgium, and is dedicated to the famous clarinet soloist Eddy Vanoosthuyse.
A slightly mysterious intro leads to an orchestral climax with ascending melodies and the entrance of the soloist. This occurs at first with fragmentary musical ideas, and then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra delivers the dialogue withthe soloist, and creates a fitting musical frame with a delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end of the music, the atmosphere from the beginning is restored, and the soloist finishes on the same note that he started the piece on.
The concerto is also available as a piano reduction.

Contemplation is het eerste deel uit het Clarinet Concerto van Jan Van der Roost. Het werd geschreven in opdracht van Musica Reservata VOF (B) en is opgedragen aan Eddy Vanoosthuyse.
Een ietwat mysterieuze intro leidt via stijgende melodieën tot een eerste orkestrale climax, waarna de solist zijn intrede doet, eerst met vooral fragmentarische muzikale gegevens, dan met langere melodische lijnen. Het orkest voert een muzikaledialoog met de solist en creëert een gepaste omkadering door middel van een ragfijne en kleurrijke instrumentatie. Naar het slot toe wordt de beginsfeer weer opgezocht, en de solist eindigt helemaal alleen met dezelfde noot als die waarmeehij begon.

Gegen Ende wird die Anfangsstimmung wieder aufgegriffen und das Solo endet mitderselben Note, mit der es begonnen hat.
