Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr Blasorchester überzeugen wird!

Ceremonial Entry is a non-programmatic introductory work in which the timpani’s set a slow movement supported by a long pedal in the basses. Interrupted by signal like motifs the dynamics gradually increase resulting in a heroic trumpet-call. The motion becomes rounder and is followed by a section which brings to mind the rhythmical cadence of galley slaves rowing. As the opening slow movement returns a climax follows similar to the “Pini di Roma” from the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry was composed to celebrate the 25th Frysk Fanfare Festival.

Ceremonial Entry is een non-programmatisch openingswerk waarin de pauken een langzame, stuwende beweging in gang zetten ondersteund door een lang orgelpunt in de bassen. Onderbroken door signaal-achtige motieven wordt de dynamieklangzaam opgevoerd en mondt uit in een hero?sch trompetsignaal. De beweging wordt ronder en er volgt een gedeelte dat het beeld zou kunnen oproepen van galeislaven die in een ritmische cadans aan de riemen trekken. Als de langzamebeweging van het begin weer in gang wordt gezet volgt er een climax die doet denken aan Pini di Roma van de Italiaanse componist Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry is geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 25ste Frysk Fanfare Festival.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

Salutation is geschreven in opdracht van de Japanse dirigent en radiopresentator Yutaka Nishida, een goede vriend van Philip Sparke. Het werk volgt een vrij conventionele marsvorm: een korte fanfare introduceert het hoofdthema, gespeeld door de klarinetten en saxofoons. Een bridgepassage, voornamelijk door het koper gespeeld, kondigt een modulatie en een legato gedeelte aan, aanvankelijk door de klarinetten gebracht en uitmondend in het conventionele triothema, dat daarna door het hele orkest wordt herhaald. Stukjes uit het legato gedeelte brengen ons terug naar de oorspronkelijke toonsoort en het hoofdthema, dat wordt versierd met motieven in het hout. Dan volgtnog een korte coda in het koper.

Salutation folgt weitgehend der traditionellen Marschform. Eine kurze Fanfare leitet das Hauptthema ein, das von den Klarinetten und Saxophonen gespielt wird. Eine Überleitung, die in erster Linie von den Blechbläsern gespielt wird, kündigt einen Tonartwechsel sowie ein zweites Thema im Legato an, das anfangs wieder von den Klarinetten gespielt wird und zum traditionellen Trio führt, welches dann vom gesamten Orchester wiederholt wird. Teile des zweiten Themas führen in die Ausgangstonart zurück und das Hauptthema, dasvon den Holzbläsern verziert wird, kehrt wieder.

L’œuvre suit la forme assez conventionnelle de la marche : une courte fanfare introduit le thème principal, joué par les clarinettes et les saxophones. Un bref pont, principalement interprété par les cuivres, annonce un changement de tonalité et un second thème legato, joué encore une fois premièrement par les clarinettes, conduit au thème traditionnel du trio, qui est ensuite repris par l'orchestre complet. Des sections du deuxième thème ramènent la pièce sa tonalité d'origine et au thème principal, agrémenté cette fois par les bois.

Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be ‘staged’ with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.

Marchissimo is een fantastisch openingsstuk voor elk concert, maar er zit wel een bijzondere wending aan! Het kan gewoon worden gespeeld zoals genoteerd, maar het is eigenlijk zo gecomponeerd dat muzikanten een voor een het podiumop kunnen komen voor ze beginnen te spelen. Het gaat hier in feite om drie marsen in één, waarbij steeds een deel van het orkest aan bod komt. Het stuk leidt naar een climax waarin alledrie de thema’s tegelijkertijd worden gespeld.

Marchissimo wurde als Eröffnung eines Konzerts geschrieben, da es einem Spieler nach dem Anderen Gelegenheit gibt, auf die Bühne zu treten. Im ersten Satz treten erst die Schlaginstrumente, zusammen mit Pikkoloflöte, Bassklarinette, Euphonium und Tuba auf. Im zweiten Satz kommen Posaune, Flöte, Klarinette und schließlich Saxophon hinzu. Im dritten Satz komplettieren die Hörner das Blasorchester, welches im fulminanten Schluss die Themen aller drei Sätze noch einmal aufnimmt. Mit Marchissimo ist ein wirkungsvoller Auftritt garantiert!

Marchissimo est un condensé de trois marches qui offre deux possibilités d’interprétation. Elle peut être jouée telle qu’elle est écrite, ou se développer selon un jeu scénique bien structuré où les musiciens entrent en scène au moment de leur première intervention dans la pièce. Chaque groupe expose alors un des trois thèmes principaux. Lorsque la formation est au complet, un court passage constitué de fragments des trois lignes mélodiques surgit travers l’ensemble de la formation avant d’aborder le tutti final, ultime retour des trois thèmes exposés simultanément.

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. Het slotthema verklankt verlossing en hoop.

Auf der Landkarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Diese Form schlägt sich bildhaft in der vorliegenden Komposition nieder, die den Staat aus drei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, drei Zeitabschnitten, die für Virginia von besonderer Bedeutung waren: Die Kolonisation, die Sklaverei und der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg. Die bewegenden Ereignisse wurden in mal lebhafte, dann wieder langsame, in mal kämpferische, mal friedvolle und mal melancholische und schließlich optimistisch stimmende Musik umgesetzt. Ein ausdrucksstarkes Werk über ein bewegendes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte!

Pour composer cette oeuvre au caractère épique, Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de trois périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’État de Virginie : la colonisation, l’esclavage et la guerre de Sécession. L’introduction expressive dépeint les aventures et les difficultés affrontées par les premiers colons. Le second mouvement plus mélancolique développe un thème mélodique mineur aux accents de blues symbolisant le déplacement des esclaves noirs en route vers les plantations de tabac de la Virginie, l’un des premiers États esclavagistes américains. L’entrée brutale et soudaine des cuivres annonce le début de la guerre civile….
