Though better known as a composer of church and keyboard music, Tomkins wrote secular vocal music that offers a compendium of all the various styles: canzonets, balletts, madrigals and 'sacred songs'. Of Things Hoped For begins with a modest arching phrase, supported by a descending pedal line. The ensuing meditation develops a new melismatic idea along with toccata elements, leading to a grand statement. A dance follows, based on the melisma, which stretches and flips the material. The little bass line from the opening re-asserts itself as a soprano tune, first in a quiet B-major episode, then triumphantly and in D major in the trumpet. Thomas was commissioned to write this work by Marilyn Biery in honor of James Biery's birthday in 2001; it was premiered by James in May, 2001, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul, MN.

The coiled energy that is built up in this first section of the tune is released into the kinetic motion of the B section. This leads to an extended tenor sax solo that will really allow your soloist to stretch out.
