You'll feel the wind at your back as this bright march weighs anchor with a bold opening and sets sail with flutes and oboes stating the main theme. Sails unfurl and the rest of the fleet (ensemble) joins in. Counter-lines and flourishes are added. Eventually the seas calm during a passage through a slower lyrical section where the opening thematic material is developed. But wait, there is land in sight! A new key is stated, and all return safely to port.

Basie's Blues is a rousing medium tempo big band chart which also functions as a Basie-style piano feature. Arranger Russell Schmidt has crafted a unique three-horn harmonization (plus optional flute and clarinet) of the main theme, giving this piece a very distinctive sound. In addition to solo space for the pianist, there is a bass solo (although this solo can easily be moved to another instrument, if desired). Basie's Blues is based on one of the easiest etudes from Jim Snidero's Easy Jazz Conception Series.

Broken Runes is a bold piece for late beginners in B minor by Doug Spata. Successive down bows at the frog create a ferocious percussive ostinato, and the challenging staccato eighth notes of the main theme add to the primitive style. The piece is rhythmically simple, tonally accessible, and features all sections of the orchestra. Students will love showing off this piece at your next concert! (1:50).

Inspired by the bedroom community to New York City, this vibrant overture musically reflects the juxtaposition of the tranquility of nature in this quiet suburb with the busyness of modern-day life in the city. Set in ABCA form, the composition opens with a trickling melodic line depicting the beginning of the brook itself building to the energetic main theme. Musically exploring that dichotomy, the work unifies to a chorale section and builds to a frenzied conclusion. Highly recommended for concerts and contest alike! (3:00).

This original concert overture is manageable by young musicians, yet it has elements that are relevant to much more challenging literature. Written in a standard overture form, the catchy melodies and rhythms will be sure to delight audiences while keeping the players fully engaged. A brief lyrical interlude adds variety and a moment of repose before returning to the more energized main theme. This is an outstanding choice for a spring concert or a first band festival/contest experience.(2:40).

The Banks of Green Willow begins in pastorale mode with the title tune established in the Strings with solo clarinet. The work builds to quite a passionate climax before re-establishing the pastorale mood of the opening. Thesong on which the story is based has a tragic death at its centre, which is reflected in the score.English composer and folksong collector George Butterworth, who lived at the turn of the last century and lost his life in theFirst World War, is known for his settings of selections of A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad and for an Orchestral rhapsody he composed on the same theme. As a Recorder of folksongs, he was successful in noting more thanthreehundred, mainly from Sussex. One of them, The Banks of Green Willow, is the basis for the idyll for Orchestra that has been adapted here for Piano.

Greatly admiring the poetry of Christina Rossetti, and in particular the elegance and poignancy of her sonnet 'An Echo from Willow-Wood', the composer initially wrote this work as the second of a group of three anthems entitled Echoes from Willow Wood, exploring aspects of hope and despair in love. These are indeed powerful themes throughout Rossetti's oeuvre, and there was a strong creative tension here with another text selected for the collection, her much anthologised 'A Birthday', which is brimming with hope and joy at the prospect of love. By contrast, in On Life's Dividing Sea the poet tugs vainly at the heart-strings of hope and concludes in dejection. Taking its title from line 8 of the poem, the setting focuses on imagery of the sea, an emblem which inspired many of the textures of the central section. Cluster chords, more lyrical gestures, and suggestions of quasi-Purcellian cadences convey a message of youthful, innocent desire being torn apart, while maintaining Rossetti's poised Victorian turn of phrase.

The Masterpiece Edition series, published exclusively by Santorella Publications, is a collection of original piano works, as well as challenging arrangements and transcriptions designed for the experienced to advanced pianist. The series is meticulously engraved and printed on heavy cover stock and quality paper to last for generations. With original works from the great masters, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and alike, as well as arrangements and transcriptions from some of the greatest works of all time, these Masterpiece Editions are sure to be popular favorites while enhancing the repertoire of most any serious pianist. In this case, we are extremely proud to release the original, unedited, Masterpiece Edition of Joplin's Solace, Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag as a 3 in 1 sheet in its purest form. Our ultimate goal is to emphasize the necessity of exceptional quality in printed sheet music. Time has heard the strains of a myriad of musical styles. Some styles liven with age while others fade. The same is true of the composers themselves; some are regarded as brilliant masters from the beginning of their lives while others are praised only posthumously. Endurance is the ultimate test. Scott Joplin endured great injustices and criticism, yet he remains the King of Ragtime. We remember the genius of Scott Joplin by publishing Solace, The Entertainer, and Maple Leaf Rag in a remarkable 3 in 1 original edition. Joplin's most popular rag, The Entertainer reached high acclaim in 1973 as a recognizable theme from the film classic, The Sting. This Academy Award-Winning film was solely responsible for the resurgence of ragtime in general, but more specifically brought renewed interest in the works of Scott Joplin. Solace was frequently heard in the background of many scenes in which the character was deep in thought. Subtitled, A Mexican Serenade, Solace has a serene Latin feel, unlike no other samba written and is the favorite of many Joplin enthusiasts. While the Maple Leaf Rag, actually became quite popular during Joplin's lifetime, so much so that it was the first printed sheet of music to sell over one million copies. We are pleased to combine these three original rags in one sheet as a special part of our Masterpiece Ragtime Selections. These newly engraved editions are clean, sharp, distinct, and accurate. An absolute pleasure to read as each crisp note seems to pop off the page.

Commissioned by the BBC as part of the celebrations for International Women's Day, and reflecting its theme of hope, Like a Singing Bird was premiered live on Radio 3 on 8 March 2015 by Sarah Connolly and the St Catharine's Girls' Choir, conducted by Edward Wickham. The distinctive vocal scoring features a small solo group of sopranos or mezzo-sopranos drawn from the upper-voice ensemble. The anthem is the first of three which are collectively entitled Echoes from Willow Wood, the second also being available in Choral Now. The text, Christina Rossetti's poem 'A Birthday', features in Virginia Woolf's classic essay A Room of One's Own, based on lectures delivered at Newnham College and at Randle's own Cambridge alma mater, Girton, an institution at the forefront of women's education for two centuries. Inspired by the clock in Girton's Stanley Library, the 'chiming rhythms' which are a driving force within the piece offer a further level of connection. The music moves from quiet anticipation to bright affirmation, the sense of something life-changing heralded by an Advent plainchant quoted in the second half. The final couplet is set apart in a hushed recitative, reflecting, in the composer's words, 'the hope I and other young female composers can have as we try to make our mark in what has traditionally been a male domain.'.

A Moorside Suite was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. The three-movement work includes a jaunty Scherzo, a lovely Nocturne, and the popular March, which has enjoyed countless performances since its premiere. Douglas E. Wagner created this arrangement with younger players in mind. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. This authentic arrangement still bears Holst's unmistakable musical signature. (3:35).

This piece pays homage to the tenacity of the human spirit and mankind's achievements of flight and space exploration. With main themes presented in minor keys, the asymmetric and odd meters---especially the 5/4---intend to give thrust and momentum to the music. The many changing meters of the piece are intended to give the listener a similar feeling that a pilot has while attempting to control an aircraft during a turbulent and bumpy flight.
