Reminiscent of the small town bands in the early 1900s playing in a music pavilion at the center of activity, Promenade presents a series of variations evoking this style, but as interpreted through the memories of 21st-century composer Ãrpád Balázs. This composition is open-air music to be played sitting down. Music intended not for marching to, but for a promenade pavilion or rather a concert hall. (Grade 3) Dur: 5:30.

Multiple Choirs. The Mass in Space was begun in the early 1980s and premiered March 12,1983 at Saint Peter's Church in NYC. After many years of following Charles Ives' dictum concerning spatial music (Place sound forces in space according to the structure of the music) in the Gregg Smith Singers' programming, Gregg decided to write a larger work completely devoted to spatial techniques. Writing music for space has one major problem: rhythmic togetherness. A couple of modern techniques and aleatoric devices and free rhythms are ideal for solving some of the problems, especially for performers at some distance from the conductor. Throughout the Mass, the chorus on stage and the piano are the set unit, while the performers in back/balcony have greater rhythmic freedom. All six movementsKyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus-Hosanna, Benetictus-Hosanna and Agnus Dei pursue a different spatial aspect. The Gregg Smith Singers have performed excerpts from Mass in Space all across the US on several national tours, and in Russia in 1995 for the St. Petersburg International Spring Festival of Contemporary Music. In a subsequent tour of Northern France, GSS was challenged and thrilled to sing it in the Riems Cathedral and in the huge Amiens Cathedral. Wherever it has been performed, audience reaction has been overwhelmingly good.

Scored for baritone solo, small 'narrator' chorus, large chorus and orchestra, MacMillan's first Passion setting was composed in 2007. Lasting 87 minutes the work is divided into two parts, with 10 movements overall. As Paul Spicer has commented, “The originality of the St John Passion lies in MacMillan's ability to mix old with new, rather in the manner of Bach in his day. There are passages of sumptuous polyphony and there is a fresh look at the text where passages of Latin are interspersed with the Gospel story in English. In movement seven ('Jesus and his Mother'), MacMillan introduces not only part of the Stabat Mater but also his own words ('Lully, lulla, my dear darling'). The final movement, which is purely orchestral, is a kind of via doloroso march with a Scots lament over quite brass chords. The string writing here, with its elegiac cello lines, is deeply reminiscent of the early 20th-century English school. This should be the War Requiem of the 21st century.&rdquo.

The piece was written in 2003, commissioned by the Budapest Spring Festival. The process of the work follows the line of the composer s personal interpretation of the original poem. In this song the original dark, grim ending appears as a sort of cathartic dénouement. The theme is love versus mortality. The work is a kind of wholly composed song written in the 21st century its form derives basically from the text. The narrator begins the story in Sprechgesang and in the final lines of the poem tries to sing in a normal singing voice. This acoustic line is followed by the merging of the sinus tones into the clarinet parts. Thus, basically, a peculiar change of toneintroduced for dramatic purposes constitutes the essence of the song. First performance: March 2003.

Scherzi for Piano by Allen Molineux - These miniatures are 6 different ways of looking at the scherzo genre. The first deals with allowing the performer to freely play the material. The second, at times, hints at a jazz-like swing style. The third is a special kind of quodlibet in that it uses snippets of well-known scherzi for piano and also for orchestra with numerous appearances of the Chopin Scherzo No. 2 holding it all together, while some actually interact with each other. For example, Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann do get in a bit of a tangle and Bruckner seems to be at odds with the early Romantics of Beethoven and Schubert. The fourth is a conversational contrast between herky-jerky and groove motion. The fifth, which is the briefest, is a contest between a short staccato figure and an ever-expanding legato one. The final scherzo is a distorted ragtime piece where the left hand avoids the typical march-like accompaniment pattern. (9'50) Grade V.

This Mass of Acceptance is dedicated to Bill Beck and the choir at St. Cyril's because of their unflagging support for me during my time of grief and sorrow after Phyllis, my wife of nearly 54 years passed away in March of 2011. In spite of continuing heartache that is abating over time, I have come to understand that my life must go on if for no other reason than to respect her commitment to love and affection for the many people she touched throughout her long and productive life. By continuing to write music I feel I am respecting her support for me whatever my artistic aspirations. I will continue for so long as I shall live to express my deepest sense of veneration and homage for her through music, poetry, art and wherever else this muse may lead me. -Dale Jergenson.
