“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

The Magnificat for 6 voices and basso continuo is the small sister of the Magnificat from the so-called Marian Vespers (Vespers 1610). Monteverdi published it in 1610 together with the larger work which included obbligato instruments - a real alternative for Vesper services and performances where only an organ is available. Score available separately - see item CA.2720500.

The Urtext edition of what is arguably the most often played double-bass work of all was long overdue. The work was previously available only in an abridged and arranged form. The edition departs from the sole extant source, a set of parts from the estate of the composer and double-bass virtuoso Johannes Sperger. The score and orchestral parts as well as the piano reduction are printed in E major as well as D major so as to make the work playable both in orchestral or Viennese tuning as well as in solo tuning. The piano reduction contains additional cadenzas by the editor.I hope players will convert to this edition.(Clifford Bartlett, in: Early Music Review, No. 142, June 2011)An exciting addition to the bassist's library. This definitive score will assist teachers and performers alike.(Marian Heckenburg, AUSTA Stringendo).

Michel Guimont has given us an attractive setting of the Magnificat set in refrain and verse format. The piece is a welcome setting for those who pray evening prayer in the parish and is a fine addition to Marian repertoire for congregations and choirs. There are two separate accompaniments in this edition. One for organ and one for piano.

This edition of Salve Regina by Pierre Villette is a version of this Marian hymn for SATB a cappella. It's written with lyrics in Latin and should be sung at a slow tempo (52). The lyrical piece features a long introductionfollowed by the Soprano solo and a finale. At the end of the solo, the voices alternate between the initial tempo and some slower parts to arrive to the close and finish in harmony. Pierre Villette (1926-1998) was a Frenchcomposer of choral and instrumental music. Strongly influenced by Catholicism, his musical heritage ran from Fauré to Messiaen.
