In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain— was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and—in rhythmic terms—contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, ‘Decades of Suffering’, echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This ‘Chain of Freedom’ is depicted in the final movement of the work.

A contrast between heroic trumpet melodies and lyrical woodwind lines highlight this effective new composition from Alan Lee Silva. Bands will sound their best and love doing it with this distinctive new piece that is suitable for concert or contest.Staccato brass figures along with woodwind trills and runs highlight the powerful opening of Legend of the Lake. The trumpet states the heroic main theme at m. 10. The dynamics soften in m. 18 for a lyrical flute solo, playing the B-melody. The full woodwind section is featured at m. 26 in a reprise of the B-melody. The trumpets proclaim the A-melody again at m. 34 with full band accompaniment, plus woodwind fills and background lines. The interlude at m. 42 features each section of the band independently as well as the entire ensemble in concerted rhythms. The reiteration of the introduction material at m. 49 builds to a slow maestoso treatment of the A-theme. A short contrapuntal interlude, featuring woodwinds at m. 61, leads to an ending statement with the complete group at m. 66. Measure 68 is a percussion feature that builds to the explosive final tonic chord and staccato unison ending.

Bach's Reformation cantata, based on what is probably Martin Luther's most famous hymn, evolved over a period of several years. At the beginning was a Weimar cantata for Oculi Sunday 1716, now missing, which was based on the hymn with an instrumental quotation in the opening aria and with the final chorale. In the Leipzig years around 1730, Bach wrote a cantata for Reformation Day using this material. It began with the first verses of Luther's hymn in a simple four-part setting and also included the other verses. Later on, in the 1730s or 1740s, Bach replaced the introductory chorale movement with a chorale setting which was unique, spacious and motet-like in its style; this - uniquely in this respect - incorporated the choral writing in an instrumental canon for oboes and organ continuo. The powerful opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias which reflect the full breadth of Bach's art of word painting and emotion. One of Bach's most magnificent cantatas, one of the greatest works in the history of music. In addition to the complete performance material the arrangements of movements 1 and 5 (with 3 trumpets, timpani as playing score) by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are available (Carus 3108089). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3108000.

This sprightly arrangement of the well-known French carol imagines shepherds playing their primitive instruments as they celebrate news of a baby born in Bethlehem. What begins as whispers from the flute and drum grow as word spreads and a fugue-like melody bounces between instruments. The song builds to a powerful climax as the shepherds gather and march down from their pastures together.Original Item#: RWS-2282-00.

Titled by the students of J. T. Lambert Middle School in East Stroudsburg, PA, which commissioned the original version for band, this brilliant, heavily accented piece emphasizes rhythmic alertness and attention to dynamic contrasts. Bold fanfare writing alternates with lyrical writing of considerable warmth and the spiccato style of playing is introduced. The title for Dance of the Thunderbolts was suggested by students at J. T. Lambert Middle School in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. This piece was originally commissioned for the sixth-grade band at the school in 2003 and has now been transcribed for string orchestra. The students specifically asked for the piece to be “a strong powerful piece with lots of accents and a strong abrupt ending.†As you can see and hear, the piece contains many of these aspects. After the title was suggested I came up with the thunderbolt dance section of the piece first stated at m. 24. Later during the compositional process I decided to frame this theme with a more lyrical theme, but one that still contains the sparkle of the staccato ostinato that is layered together with the elongated theme. Following the thunderbolt dance at m.24 is a short interlude to soften the sound before a return of the theme in fragments traded between different sections and in different tessituras. The lyrical theme returns and is followed by “a strong abrupt ending†as suggested by the students. As with all of my pieces at this level, the tempo is merely a suggestion and should be adjusted slower or faster to fit the needs of your students and the performance situation. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2007.

When David Heard was written as a memorial to the victims of the 2011 terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utoya. It sets the well-known and intense passage from 2 Samuel and intersperses it with a verse from Psalm 39: Lord, let me know mine end, scored for three solo voices. After opening with a powerful declamatory passage, the music switches rapidly between contemplative and more dramatic material, reflecting the mood of the two texts and playing out the musical narrative. This gradually fades over repeated invocations of the Psalm, leaving a solitary tenor voice hanging in the air. - See more at: http://www.fabermusicstore.com/When-David-Heard-0571571379.aspx#sthash.b9aCdYDx.dpuf.
