The musicologist Helmut Lauterwasser, staff member of the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) in the work group located at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, recently discovered two choral pieces for men's voices by the young Johannes Brahms: Des Postillons Morgenlied (text by Wilhelm Muller) and Goldne Bruecken (text by Emanuel Geibel).Brahms presumably wrote Des Postillons Morgenlied as early as 1847 at the age of 14. The piece is thus the earliest of all of Brahms' transmitted works. Goldne Bruecken was perhaps written for a concert given in Celle in early May 1853. Brahms dedicated the two works to the men's choral society of that town. When he later tried to collect the non-published early works in order to destroy them, he apparently forgot the Celle pieces. The previously unknown copies had been preserved in the estate of the Alte Celler Liedertafel. Their authenticity has since been confirmed by the Brahms Complete Edition in Kiel. The Chorus of the Bayerischer Rundfunk gave the first performance and the world- premiere broadcast of the pieces in its BR-KLASSIK program on 5 March 2010.

A bold and invigorating first movement, a mysterious and tender second movement and a third movement with several mood shifts from lyrical to highly rhythmical. In 1971, Lane wrote his Piano Sonata 3 for piano. For whom this piece was intended remains unknown. Karl Tricomi, a student of Lane’s and also a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, performed its world premiere five years later in 1976 at Carnegie Hall (NY), in an all-Lane piano recital. This is the only documented performance of this piece. In 1971, Lane only composed another three pieces which were for tenor saxophone and wind band, soprano voice and piano and a trio for violin, cello and piano, which was dedicated to Paul Van Ness, the dedicatee of Piano Sonata 2.

A rewarding extension to the repertoire Friedrich Schneider, remembered in the music world almost entirely through his oratorio Das Weltgericht (The Last Judgment), bequeathed at his death in 1853 an oeuvre of over 1000 works, among them 23 symphonies. Breitkopf & Hartel, whose association with Schneider began as early as 1805, is now publishing for the first time an edition of his Symphony No. 16. The symphony composed in 1818 is impressive proof that outside of Vienna the romantic symphony was also developing then. To this day Schneider's extensive symphonic works are almost completely unknown. Inviting us to rediscover him, the work offers a welcome and valuable repertoire extension in the realm of the early romantic symphony.A contemporary of Beethoven, Schneider's soundworld is not a million miles away from the great man's. He is on frisky form in his 16th symphony. (Jeremy Pound, BBC Music Magazine).

Sibelius orchestral works rediscovered It was a minor sensation when in 1996 the conductor Osmo Vanska recorded a completely unknown, more than 20-minute-long orchestral work by the young Jean Sibelius in Lahti: Skogsraet (The Forest Nymph) had suddenly re-emerged. But this was no mere rediscovery, since in his later years, Sibelius had graciously agreed that his early work could be performed in a radically abridged form. He thus left his score in a rather confusing condition. Varsang (Spring Song), the second work in this volume of the Complete Edition, has two (or even three?) early versions, which makes for a most complicated source examination. Tuija Wicklund thus faced a mountain of problems in preparing the edition. The editor's meticulous work ultimately yielded three complete orchestral scores from the years 1894/95, thus from a period in which no one can claim that such pieces are early works. By this time, Sibelius had already made a name for himself in Finland with his first masterpieces Kullervo (1892), En saga (first version, 1892), the Karelia Suite (1893) and Rakastava (1894).

This previously-unpublished Concerto a Quadro presumably started life as a concerto for the standard Baroque forces of flute, strings and continuo, now otherwise unknown; it is preserved in its surviving form for flute, violin, viola and cello in a set of manuscript parts apparently copied by an amateur musician in Sweden. Although unlikely to be the work of Handel, as a rare early example of music for flute quartet it is an attractive extension to a repertoire otherwise dominated by the works of Mozart and his contemporaries. In the present publication, editorial figuring in the cello part allows for the possibility of expanding the texture with additional continuo instruments.

This motet, no matter how popular it is, presents Bach scholars with a few puzzles: is it really by Bach? Somehow the text doesn't fit with the notes, at least not so that it's comfortable to sing. And is the musicologists' problem the same for the choral singers? Not, of course not in the Alleluia fugue: in that, there really is something to worry about ... year of composition unknown. The cantata Ein hoher Tag kommt, composed for Christmas Day, cannot be precisely dated (as is the case with most of Homilius's cantatas), but most certainely it can be assigned to his tenure as Kreuzkantor in Dresden (1755-1785). The author of the cantata text is unknown.

Without doubt, the most important chamber music work by Malats, and one of his finest compositions, is his Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in B Flat Major. It was composed in 1898.Malats dedicated the Trio to one of the greatest composers of all time, Camille Saint-Saëns, close personal friend of both Malats and Granados. An unknown gem of the chamber music repertoire, this Modernist work is superior in form, technique and musical content to similar work by Granados, Breton, Chapi and others.Malats had considerable knowledge and experience with the trio form. In 1894 at the Sala erard in Paris he performed four trios by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Godard and Saint-Saëns with C. Flesch and Hasselmann. Given his experiences with chamber music it is not surprising that Malats exhibited such confidence and security in writing his Trio maintaining perfect balance and dialogue between the three instruments which he achieved through masterful control of the formal structure. This work has a rich harmonic language and none of the Nationalist qualities of his previous pieces. Instead, it reveals Malats proximity to then current European music yet, at the same time, exhibits his personal style and musical knowledge.

This new, completely revised and reset centenary edition of Satie’s complete piano music in three volumes has returned to Satie’s manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.As well aspresenting every piece for piano solo or piano reduction that Satie published, this edition also includes some previously unknown pieces, like the Petite Sonate that he wrote for Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum, as well as some interestingfirst versions of well-known pieces, like San Bernardo, a trial version of Españaña (1913) and the markedly different first version of Les Pantins dansent (1914). In addition, there areexamples of the different types of exercises that Satie completedat the Schola between 1905 and 1912, some extra trial Enfantines, and some earlier drafts of his famous Sports et divertissements. To help pianists, suggested metronome marks have been added throughout, and there are also some performance suggestionsfor the Rose Croix pieces of the 1890s, which otherwise appear to be all quiet and slow. The notation has been made as user-friendly as possible, without detracting from Satie’s concerns about the “extériorisation†of his musical thought in print.

This collection of oboe music, written by living composers, is an invaluable resource for any oboist of Grade 8 and conservatoire standard who is curious about widening their repertoire, and exploring the various languages of modern music. The term modern music can alienate many minds who may think it will be too difficult technically; aurally unknown and therefore unsatisfying; harmful or damaging to their musical sensibility. To all these points this volume has the answers. Every one of these pieces requires challenging technical skills demanded of any of the more traditional oboe repertoire, and additionally they will improve technique. Each piece portrays a characterand language that is approachable and compelling. Far from damaging musical sensibility these musical types will open the ear and enrich the spirit. Some are physically demanding and require very good breath control, others need patience in learning new fingerings and timbres, and some travel to extreme registers. But, in all cases, the effort will be rewarding, and not only that, the knowledge gained about the oboe and how it works will be equally entertaining and stimulating.
