Fondé le 19 septembre 1857, l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Decatur (Illinois, États-Unis) est une des plus anciennes formations civiles américaines. Depuis sa création, l’orchestre n’a jamais cessé de participer activement la vie florissante de la cité, se produisant lors de concerts en intérieur ou en plein air, de parades ou de certains événements spéciaux. la demande de Jim Culbertson, directeur musical de l’orchestre, Philip Sparke fut chargé d’écrire une pièce qui illustre la longue et riche histoire de la formation travers un répertoire varié qui s’étend de l’universclassique avec ses ouvertures et marches jusqu’aux œuvres originales et arrangements d’œuvres récents.A Midwest Celebration s’inspire de quelques célèbres ouvertures orchestrales du XIXe siècle écrites par de grands compositeurs tels que Berlioz, Verdi et Suppé. L’introduction est florissante. Tout s’apaise lorsqu’apparaît une mélodie aux courbes harmonieuses, jouée par les cors, les clarinettes et les saxophones. Mais peine commence-t-il se développer que le thème est brutalement interrompu par l’intervention des trompettes qui ouvrent un vertigineux passage Vivace, illuminé par des fanfares brillantes (cuivres) et une profusion d’éléments d’ornementation (bois). Les cors reprennent l’exposition de la mélodie initiale soutenus par la douceur ondulante des fl tes. Soudain, les lignes mélodiques du Vivace resurgissent et balayent la musique pour progresser vers leur intensité maximale, point de rencontre entre les deux thématiques qui mènent le composition vers sa conclusion.

Johannes Brahms completed his Symphony No. 1 in September and October 1876 in Lichtenthal near Baden-Baden. It was given its first performance in Karlsruhe on 4 November 1876 under the direction of Otto Dessoff. Brahms later personally conducted the work several times. After a thorough revision of the second movement, the symphony was first published by Simrock in score, parts and piano reduction in 1877. The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher.In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanieâ€), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui.
