The quintessential Flag-Waver (as recorded on the 1959 album The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess, featuring the Bill Potts Big Band), this one is a real romp through a happy tune and a brilliant chart, arranged to feature everyone in the band. Some only have 4 bars, others have more blowing space, but everyone gets their chance in the spotlight. Great fun, great music and a great chart! 5-5-5-4.

As written for and performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band, here is the long-missing chart that Holman wrote to feature Buddy on Drums and Pat LaBarbera on Tenor Sax. What a great chart! There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the Full Nelson album and also included in the Verve Jazz Masters collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Regular saxophone parts are also included if doubles are not available. 5-4-4-4.

Stan Kenton had a certain touch in his arranging that stood out. He took a simple, slow-swinging approach to this great Neal Hefti tune, and it was one of the most popular charts played by the band in the 1970's. Piano takes the melody, while the trombones set the harmonic and rhythmic groove. This is a wonderful piece to program, becasue it is so different than most charts. 5-5-5-3.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Berlin Bei Nacht' is the 4th movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. Set in an up-tempo fashion, this Oliver Nelson's 1971 forward-thinking original starts out with an in-your-face swing unison line played by the saxophones and the trumpets, with the trombones and rhythm section providing the undercurrent. It then moves into a half-time Latin feel before settling into a funk/rock blues solo section (trumpet, or as you choose). This exciting and unique arrangement will be a favorite for your band and audiences alike! 5-4-4-3 (opt. 5th trombone).

Bob has created an absolutely thrilling 12 minute work, inspired by his Celtic roots (Towednack is a small area in Cornwall, England). The Celtic influence is heard in the triple-meter settings and the interlude which reflects back on a Riverdance style of music. Tenor sax is featured. Very much in the genre of his Metheny/Mays charts of the past. Commissioned by Riverside Community College (CA) Performed at the August, 1999 Kenton Sounds concert in Los Angeles. No w.w. doubles. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes and aux. perc.).

Another amazing, exciting chart has been added to the Pat Metheny Series! Bob Curnow's arrangement of Metheny/Mays' composition Stranger In Town hits you in the face right from the start and ends in the same manner. With typical Metheny/Mays flavor, there is a musical shift in the middle as solo space for tenor saxophone emerges, followed by a full ensemble interlude which then takes us to a peak ending. Originally recorded by PMG on their album We Live Here, Curnow has once again masterfully arranged this tune to fit perfectly in a big band setting! 5-4-4-4.

This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has quite a bluesy feel to it while providing a nice variation to the standard blues changes that you might not expect. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this pro (original) version, you will find Oliver Nelson's amazing solo transcribed and arranged as a trumpet soli. Very cool and fun to play! If you like Oliver Nelson's music, you'll love this chart! 5-4-4-3.

This was recorded on the Stan Kenton Orchestra CD Live at the Tropicana. This is a very hip version of the old jazz standard. It is set at a moderate swing tempo, and there is solo space for trumpet, trombone, tenor sax and an intro by bass alone. The solos have been transcribed and are included on the parts. An additional set of trumpet parts (along with the original versions) are provided to make this much more playable. It still swings like crazy. A refreshing, wonderful look at an oft-played tune. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

This medium-swing original by Bob Curnow focuses on alto saxophone and trumpet playing the melody. The piece has solos for those instruments and bass (all written out). There is nice use of counterpoint in the introduction and ending. The piece is light in texture and very appropriate for middle school bands. The highest written note for trumpet is B. All rhythm parts are written out. 5-4-4-4.
