Also known as Patterns For Orchestra (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.

Bill Holman wrote some of the best music played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Boop Boo Be Doop is surely one of those charts. The melody is scored for four horns within the big band setting, and those four horns (alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone) are also the featured soloists. As recorded on The Concepts Era - Live!, this chart represents Holman's ability to write swinging, exciting music for big band. 5-5-5-3.

As recorded on the brilliant CD Afrique, by the Count Basie Orchestra, and also (in another form) by the Buddy Rich Band on the CD Swingin' New Big Band. This chart is an up-tempo swing tune which just roars from beginning to end. Solos for piano (a la Basie), trumpet and tenor saxophone. a flagwaver ... the perfect opening number ... as the original liner notes stated. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra (and included in the Mosaic CDs The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra), this is one of those charts that escaped notice for many, many years. Don Sebesky, one of the world's premier arrangers, took a magnificant Rolf Ericson tune and created an arrangement unlike anything you've heard before. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and trumpet, weaving in and out of various textures created by muted brass. The waltz feel begins to accelerate and rise at a climactic point where the melody is once again taken over by a solo trumpet and alto saxophone. Surprisingly, brass ranges are moderate. If you wish to program a piece which will have a very unique flavor and great audience appeal, this would be the chart! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This pro version is exactly as Oliver Nelson's recorded version. 5-4-4-3.

One of the great pieces written for the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra, founded and conducted by Stan Kenton. Four french horns are essential, along with 4 trumpets, 5 trombones and woodwinds. Exciting and challenging music. Recorded on the L.A. Neophonic Orchestra LP. Woodwinds require 2 piccolo, 2 clarinets and bass saxophone (baritone saxophone opt. part included). This is a new, updated Finale version.

This edited version maintains the integrity of Oliver's original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 5-4-4-3.

Short, sweet and swingin'! Willie Maiden's arrangement of I'll Be Seeing You packs a whopper in a tiny box, making this chart perfect as an encoure closer for any set. As recorded by Maynard Ferguson and his orchestra on the album Dancing Sessions, Willie's arrangement makes great use of the trombone section as they carry the melody upfront before passing it around to the rest of the band. There is some space for a short trumpet solo before the band comes roaring in at the end to take it out with a punch! This chart should be in every band's library! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

This is another of the many wonderful charts arranged by Niehaus for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. A splendid rendition of a great standard, and it swings like crazy! It contains all of the elements so associated with the Kenton band. Wonderfully inventive writing which at first states the melody with a small band. 5-5-5-3 (edited to be played without mellophoniums and can be played with 8 brass or 10).

This chart was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the CD I Told You So. This is yet another terrific Holman chart written for that band! A medium-tempo swing chart which features, among other things, a marvelous sax soli (about three choruses). This is an absolutely wonderful chart, written for and recorded by the great Basie Band. 5-5-4-4 (flute double on tenor part) (condensed score).
