My Exsultet uses the ancient chant to which the Easter Proclamation is declaimed, normally by a deacon at the start of the Great Vigil of Easter. The chant dates from somewhere between the fourth and seventh centuries and consists of formulaic repetitions of simple phrases. I have elaborated these phrases canonically, melodically, and harmonically into a three-part vocal fabric, accompanied by obbligato instruments. The full text of the original goes on for quite some time. My choral-instrumental version is much shorter.
Commissioned by the Young People's Chorus of New York City for Transient Glory and dedicated to Francisco J. Núñez.

Majestic and exuberant, this quintessential concert/contest selection opens and closes with an accented Latin text theme. In the middle, a contrasting chant-like Resonet in laudibus softens and slows before returning to the rhythmic feel. As expected from experienced writer, Victor Johnson, each voicing is sensitive to appropriate vocal ranges and tessitura. An optional trumpet fanfare is included in the octavo.

From a simple, joyful Gospel Acclamation based on the tune LAMBILLOTTE (Alleluia, Song of the Spirit) comes this full Mass setting where all the sung portions are based on that tune. While featuring a driving, rhythmic piano part, there is also an alternate accompaniment with more intentional melodic support that is suitable for organ. Optional instrumental parts are intended for trumpet and flute but may be played by any combination of C or B-flat treble instruments. With the joyful exuberance of the tune at its core, this Mass setting is especially well-suited to Easter and Ordinary Time.
