Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!

The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident. Overture for a Special Occasion is feestelijk van sfeer. The effective use of solo percussion, combined with an elegant orchestration, brought a warm reception at the premiere of this work from Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concertino Series’. Yagisawa’s style is usually considered as rather dramatic, however, inthis piece he adds a whole new dimension to his compositional skills.

This piece, as the title might suggest, brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. Amongst his best hits are Nabucco from 1842, which signified a turn-around after the flop of a previous opera, as well as Rigoletto, which in 1851 propelled him to international fame. Verdi’s Triumphs features: Triumphmarch and Su! Del nilo al sacro lido from Aida, the Prisoners’ Freedom Choir from Nabucco and La donna è mobile from Rigoletto.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also “a premiere in Springâ€. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country’s history…One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired—and it will take great effort to overcome thepsychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

This overture is yet more proof of Philip Sparke's ability to contribute serious band literature which also has definite audience appeal. A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. This is developed - with the occasional change of meter to refresh the ear - before the fanfare returns, cleverly counterpointed against the music from the quicker section.A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales dont they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. Beautiful and poignant, here is an intriguing musical portrait of the passage of time. Relaxed and gentle, with lush, solid harmonies and an occasional glimpse of dissonance, this is a work that fully displays the musical dimensions of the ensemble. The lyrical melody, continuously passed and developed from one section to another, represents the dawning of each new day. Perfect for concerts, festivals and graduation ceremonies.

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of thecomposer's youngest son's wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)although no literalquotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of thecomposer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literalquotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and concert band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

The composition tells a cheerful morning story from the perspective of an alarm clock. The alarm clock dutifully follows its task and wakes people from their slumber, occasionally having to overcome resistance. However, in the end, people recognize “in time” that the morning heralds a new, joyful day and marks a positive phase in life.
