Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

This work was especially composed for a concert series that was characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. Thus, a typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are all concisely contained in this three-minute work.

Großer Gott, wir loben dich is a well-known German hymn, written by Ignaz Franz in the 18th century but based on the 4th century Te Deum laudamus. After a radiant introduction by the brass section, the first variation on the chorale appears. Subsequently, the song is rendered in its original form. Then three more variations follow. The result is a solemn work that is very fitting within the context of a church service, but is also suitable for many other occasions. Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean “Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!”. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’. The composer himself says about the song, ‘Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ‘blue notes’ in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.’Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: ‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (See you again, and farewell!).

The Sacred Spheres by Tyler S. Grant is written in two contrasting movements. The title of the first movement, From Harmony, from heav'nly harmony..., comes directly from the first line of John Dryden's poem, A Song for St. Cecilia's Day. The first few notes musically depict the beginning of the universal framework described in the text through delicate textures and orchestrations that develop as the movement progresses. The second stanza of the poem highlights the capacity for musical elements to inspire passion, which is represented at the climax of the first movement. The second movement, Cries, hark the foe comes, picks up the poem from the third stanza, highlighting the spectrum of emotions that can be summoned by various instruments. The beginning of the movement highlights the trumpet's loud clangor along with drums that inspire war and conflict. The movement transitions to a section of mourning through the sound of a warbling flute. The ending of the movement combines the final stanzas along with the Grand Chorus to recapitulate earlier material and create a celebratory and impactful finale. Commissioned by a consortium of bands in honor of Randall O. Coleman; Recorded by the Kennesaw State University Wind Ensemble.
