The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Tartan Tapestries is an original piece that sets out to emulate Scottish folk music. Composer Larry Clark has created a concert overture in triple meter to capture the essence of music from Scotland. After a lilting first section, lush and beautiful moments weave a tapestry of sounds with the lyrical, middle section of the piece. There is an optional part for bagpipes, and an optional ending should you chose to use this instrument as part of the piece. Alert your contest music committee about this strong new piece for advancing groups.Tartan Tapestries was commissioned by Friends of the Arts for the Saint Andrew's School Band in Boca Raton, Florida. The band program at Saint Andrew’s School is under the direction of Andrea Wolgin. The premiere took place on November 29, 2017.When I was asked by their conductor Ms. Wolgin to write a piece for the Saint Andrew’s School, I asked her what kind of involvement she wanted the students to have in the process. We discussed several options for having the students involved in the process of creating with the type of piece they wanted. We set up a “Skype†meeting with members of the band to discuss the piece. During this discussion, the consensus of the students was that they wanted a piece depicting the Scottish influence to the school. They also wanted a piece that would challenge all sections of the band and to include bagpipes if possible. I asked that the students be involved in helping to name the piece once it was completed, for which they agreed and were very helpful. Armed with this information, I set out to compose a piece for them, and Tartan Tapestries is the result. The piece begins with a fanfare gesture based upon rhythms and harmonies that appear throughout the piece. I chose the lilting triple feel to the piece, to bring about the Scottish flavor. I wanted the fanfare to be bardic sounding, to depict the strength of the Scottish people and for the piece to have a dynamic opening. The fanfare contains material that alludes to the main theme and with a bit of dissonance and tension that is resolved in the main body of the piece. The main theme is a lilting original melody, but one that I hope with have the essence of Scottish folk songs. The main idea is followed by a more modal and dark sounding secondary theme, first stated in the horns. This material is later used in the development section of the piece. The main theme returns several times, with different and varied orchestrations and harmonic treatments. This is followed by a short transition leading to the more lyrical and slower second section of the piece. A transparent presentation of the lyrical theme, which is based on aspects of the main theme, is presented first by a solo flute. This section is a nod to famous composer Malcom Arnold’s wonderful works for orchestra in its style and orchestration. After a transition or bridge section with a solo euphonium, the piece builds to a dramatic climax of the lyrical theme by the full band. This subsides to a return of the solo flute to end this second section of the piece, followed by a transition back the main theme. The solo bagpipes play a central role in the return of the main theme and take center stage after being heard in the distance earlier in the work. The piece brings back a shortened version of the darker secondary theme, followed by a hint of the fanfare material that builds to one last statement of the main theme by the full band, before leading to a dramatic coda to complete the work.It has been my pleasure to have been given the opportunity to compose this piece for the Saint Andrew’s School Band! I thank Andrea Wolgin for making it happen, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed bringing the piece to life.–Larry ClarkLakeland, Florida 2017.

When Hearts Tremble is an emotion packed piece dedicated to musician friends lost all to soon. This beautiful composition by Brant Karrick reflects on the fragility of human existence, joyous memories of loved ones and their effect on everyone around them, and maintaining hope for what the future will hold when all feels lost. This tour de force piece perfectly displays Karrick's polished compositional craft with impeccable scoring, beautiful melodic writing, and exceptional orchestrational color. While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that friendship lasts forever.†After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa’s close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores “how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone,†much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra.

This serious programmatic work depicts a day in the life of a honeybee hive by drawing on various musical effects throughout. The opening section, Daybreak, is tranquil and serene, yet intensifies as the hive becomes active. A flurry of musical activity accompanies the next section, Scouting for Pollen, as forager bees disperse. Other interesting sections include Directional Tango, Her Majesty, the Queen, Hungry Bear (depicting the ransacking of the hive), and New Cycle Begins, during which several of the previous themes come back in a brilliant collage of musical sounds and textures. Moving Heaven and Earth was commissioned by the Clark County School District Commissioning Project, Las Vegas, NV, USA and is dedicated to Bunny Wasserman and her Make Music Matter, Las Vegas foundation, in appreciation of her tireless work in support of music education. It was premiered in January 2012, conducted by Col. John R. Bourgeois. The piece consists of a theme and 4 variations; although the theme is original it contains a phrase heavily influenced by a 14-bar passage from the Libera Me in Fauré’s Requiem. It is a sequence that the composer finds harmonically compelling and, although it is never quoted directly, it appears in altered form in thetheme and each of the variations. In the original, the passage is set to the words: Quando cæli movendi sunt et terra (When the heavens and the earth shall be moved) which gave inspiration for the title. After the initial statement of the theme, Variation 1 features the upper woodwinds who play a stirring melody and accompany the Fauré reference with florid arpeggios. Variation 2 spotlights the saxophones and lower woodwind in a rhythmic, modal waltz, whilst Variation 3 is a broad chorale for the brass and percussion. Variation 4 starts with a fugue, which introduces each section of the band in turn before the original theme appears on the brass while the woodwind continue the fugal figuration. Moving Heaven and Earth wurde vom Schulbezirksverband in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) in Auftrag gegeben.

A CD that includes four great works by Franco Cesarini performed by the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano under the direction of the Maestro. Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor BWV 582 In Franco CesariniÂ’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeittinged with late-Romanticism. A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach superbly arranged for wind orchestra. Sinfonietta No. 3 “Zwölfmalgreien Sketchesâ€, Op. 56 In composing the Sinfonietta No. 3 , Franco Cesarini was inspired by the history of the municipality of Zwölfmalgreien, made up of various towns, villages and scattered districts which were incorporated to the City of Bolzano (Italy) over one hundred years ago. The peculiarity of these places, different from each other, but all characterized by rare beauty, have contributed to create this 3-mouvement work (City Life, Mountain Shadows and Classic Wineyards), which translates into music the activities of the villages, the winter days and the lively atmosphere in the wine regions. A perfect trip to this wonderful part of Italy! Suite Siciliana, Op. 57b The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada , Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola , Tambourin , Sicilianaand Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colorful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the “pupiâ€, which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion into ancient traditions of this beautiful island! Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, Op. 55 Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how was born Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapes†, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements - The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon , Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gate - which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, a sumptuous musical portrait of the “Windy Cityâ€. I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.I Love the 207 is in februari 2010 gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Osumi Symphonic Band uit Kyoto, Japan.

Amber moons are beautiful and rare full moons, created when the sun is high in the sky and directly opposite the moon. Amber Moon begins with an opening fanfare, then moves into the first theme based on this fanfare. A second statement of the theme is repeated softly, followed by a lyrical secondary theme in the woodwinds. Variations follow this statement, and cyclically, like the comings and goings of the Moon and Sun, the piece concludes with a return to the initial theme.Amber moons are very beautiful and rare full moons, created when the sun is high in the sky and directly opposite the moon. They appear unusually large and low on the horizon with a deep, rich honey color and are believed to be signs of blessing and good luck.  Amber Moon begins with an opening fanfare, then moves into a first theme based on this fanfare. A second statement of the theme is repeated softly, followed by lyrical second theme in the woodwinds. Variations follow this statement and a return to theme one concludes the piece.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.Peter Terry, 2018.

“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.†– Edward Abbey Notes from the Road was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the music Federation of the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, as compulsorypiece for the second category of the Canton Festival in 2023. The piece is written in the typical form of an Italian overture, with the sequence of veloce-lento-veloce tempi. Reflections on life and the street as its metaphor were the driving elements in composing this piece. The way represents a symbol characteristic to many cultures, so much so that the verb “to walk†or the word “path†indicate a way of being in life and of fulfilling oneself. “Making one's way†means affirming oneself; “Having a way†indicates one's own and personal approach. The road is the most beautiful metaphor of life: there is a departure, a destination, and in the middle lies a path that is sometimes winding, with challenges to overcome and directions to take. An introspective piece, an invitation to each of us to reflect on our own “pathâ€.

Golden Winds was commissioned by Jugendblasorchester Schramberg, Germany, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012. They gave the premiere, conducted by Andreas Hirt, at their Christmas concert that year. The work opens with a nervously energetic theme in the lower woodwinds, which is developed in canon and builds to climax for the whole band. The mood subsides to introduce a meditative section featuring first the clarinets and then a rich, chorale-like theme which grows into a passionate tutti. This then leads to the main body of the piece, a rhythmic vivo, which introduces its main theme quietly before it is taken up by the full band. A brief bridge passage thenintroduces a muscular second subject which develops until the bridge passage reappears to lead to a repeat of the main theme. This is transformed to herald a return of the opening bars of the piece, which now bring the work to a celebratory close.

The Puckish Poltergeist, a programmatic work based on the pranks of a devious poltergeist, contrasts the terrifying and the comical. Through the use of rapid meter changes, simultaneous duple and triple rhythmic patterns, and contrasting textural scoring, the composer vividly conjures to mind frightened castle dwellers as they run from varied assortments of flying furniture and kitchen utensils, and the slightly bent puck, as he plays his little 'pranks.' Composed in the spring of 1991, The Pucking Poltergeist was premiered in Chicago at the 45th Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic by the VanderCook College of Music Symphonic Band under the direction of Roger Rocco. It subsequently received a performance by the United States Military Band at West Point Acadamy. In February of 1993, it was featured as one of five works selected for the Symposium XVII for New Band Music at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Try to picture extracting yourself from a maze with someone closely in pursuit, darting here, there and everywhere as quickly as you could to find a way out of. Fleet afoot would be an appropriate way to describe how the music in this piece should be approached---played lightly and with a sense of direction leading to the next phrase or rhythmic pattern. This tuneful and rhythmic offering provides some delightful twists and turns along the way! (3:00) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
