French composer and teacher, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded, Concerto for Oboe being no exception. French oboist, Louis Bleuzet (1874-1941) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prize for oboe. Being a virtuoso of the instrument himself, his The Technique of the Oboe is very well-informed. Bleuzet's career saw him become soloist at the Paris Opera as well as a professor of the oboe at the Paris Conservatoire. Published in 1937, The Technique of the Oboe was compiled by the composer toward the end of his life. The second volume gives focus to scales in thirds and fourths, mechanical exercises, whole tone scales and the chromatic scale. John Tavener 's Kaleidoscopes is a tribute to Mozart for Solo Oboe, Percussion and four String Quartets, lasting approximately 30 minutes. The work was commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia, and first performed by them with soloist Nicholas Daniel on 6th November 2006 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. This is the Solo Oboe part. In the composer's note, Tavener explains his high regard for Mozart, and how in Kaleidoscopes he attempts to take Mozart's music and meditate upon it in four main cycles. He states that all the music has its source in Mozart, whether it be rhythmic, harmonic or contrapuntal. .
