Ole Schmidt is best known throughtout the world as a conductor, but he is also a highly talented and productive composer who has worked in nearly every idiom and genre. This piece is typical of his expressive qualities and demonstrates that while his music is often eclectic, sometimes experimental, he forms a basis in the Neoclassical tradition. It is his leaning toward driving rhythm and jazz-inspired harmony that makes his music compelling and attractive to listen to.

Englund's second piano sonatina The Parisian dates from 1984. Neoclassical in style, its brilliantly driving first movement gives way to the the sarabande-like middle movement, whose ambiguous harmonic motion in parallel thirds with octave doublings is challenged by a clangorous outburst of polytonality. The last movement is a fiery gigue on a jagged, syncopated theme.

'Bartók wrote the first dance around the time of the Romanian movements of the 'Seven Sketches', after his first trip collecting Romanian folk music in July-August 1909. The second dance is the fruit of March the following year, and it was only after some time he decided they should be published as a pair. From the beginning, audiences were impressed by the first dance, in the composer's peculiar performance, with its initial drumming, and its driving rhythms. If less popular, compositionally the second dance is more original. He parades and varies his material in a chain form, and this too is reminiscent of the dances heard in the playing of Romanian Transylvanian villagemusicians, which in his scholarly work Bartók called 'motive dances.' Measure Me, Sky! (SSAA) encourages your treble singers to take hold of their limitless potential. Ascending vocal lines stretch across a driving accompaniment, as if reaching out to grasp the expanse depicted in Leonora Speyer's rapturous poem. This impassioned piece builds through key changes and several returns of the opening material before arriving at its brilliant final chord, reflecting Loveliness, wings for my flight! A thrilling concert opener or closer!

The work was written for the pianist Uta Walther.I have used the title Toccata in the older sense of the word: the piece is free in its form and alternates between motoric, driving sections, elaborate passage work and freer very fast passages that flash by. The fugue, with its several subjects, was inspired by the text on the various pillars of a wooden sculpture in Brixworth Country Park, England. I often gor for walks there and stand for a long time in front of the sculpture and look at the lake spread out before it. Vivienne Olive.
