The Trombone part is all written out with jazz inflections and articulation included. The Piano part is all written out, but also includes the jazz chords for players who wish to comp. Playground Games is a collection of etudes for bass trombone portraying these traditional games and reflecting on the childrens' enjoyment. We can picture them jumping, playing Hopscotch, Leapfrog and 'Skipping' (the Double Dutch version of this popular game) and running around in the fast and furious Tag! More peaceful moments are to be found when you sense the concentration during Marbles and Cat's Cradle and an exciting contest is on during Conker Fight.

These entertaining pieces are in many genres and styles, keys and meters. Some etudes are funky and rhythmic, others dance-like with waltzes and a merry gigue. They are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers.

The etudes evoke feelings for those on the playground today and for others, bringing back happy memories.

--The Wassailing Song is a secular holiday song dating back to the 12th Century.

--It is traditionally sung at Christmas, but actually does not celebrate the nativity, rather the New Year!

--The word Wassail is an olde English word for a spiced wine or ale. It was common to go door-to-door toasting to one's Good Health.

--Ron Babcock's lively arrangement of about 5 minutes is inspired by Ralph Vaughan Williams and is for intermediate to advanced performers.

Ave Maria is a traditional Catholic prayer asking for intercession from the Virgin Mary. The prayer has often been set to music.

Frank Gazda has beautifully arranged four musical settings of the prayer for Trombone Quartet or four-part Trombone Ensemble by: Jacob Arcadelt (Renaissance), Johann Joseph Fux (Baroque), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Classical) and Giuseppe Verdi (Romantic).

Although originally composed as four-part choral settings, they work perfectly for the Trombone. Each piece stands on its own as a work of beauty, or the four can be performed as a whole. They are at a moderately advanced level of difficulty.

Ryan Diefenderfer's clever arrangement of the Traditional Christmas carol God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen for Trombone Quartet begins as a Bass Trombone feature ballad with accompanying jazz chords. Then it ramps up to a jazz waltz giving all parts a good workout.
This almost 4-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Jim Pugh's magical arrangement of the Traditional Christmas carol We Three Kings for Trombone Sextet begins with a mysterious Gregorian style chant and then opens up into a funky jazz section including an improvised solo for the 1st player.
This 5-minute work for advanced performers concludes in total relaxation as in a child-like dream on Christmas morning.

Joshua F'it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f'it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies.

Put into perspective, Joshua's battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era.

This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers.
