Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume I of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Bass Trombone (Tuba) study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship.Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical ©tude book.I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the bass trombone (or tuba) while keeping the wide tessitura of the original. The keys have been changed to put each ©tude in a more suitable range, while the trills from the original bassoon version are included primarily for tuba players. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding..

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto for Bassoon was composed in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Concerto for Bassoon. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced bassoonists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.â€.

“Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, Récit, Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Bassoon is expressive and virtuosic, displaying the entire range of the instrument, accompanied by rhythmic quavers and spread chords in the Piano. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, â€â€œhis works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.â€â€œ Récit, Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano is a highly suitable and exciting addition to the advanced bassoonist's repertoire.â€.

Ralph Sauer's landmark new work, Practice With Bach, will challenge your technique and musicality with demanding new etudes. Based on the keyboard works of J. S. Bach, each of the Three Volumes is available in five different versions--Alto Trombone, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. Each version is customized for the individual instrument (choice of key, range, ornaments, etc.). Tenor trombonists will find that the Alto version is excellent for high register practice and alto clef reading. Likewise, Tenor trombonists can use the Bass version for low register work. Bass trombonists will find excellent material in the Tenor version for work in the upper register and tenor clef reading. The Euphonium version is in the same key as the Tenor version, but all in bass clef, with many more trills added. The Tuba version is in the same key as the Bass version, also with more trills. Volume One contains Twenty-four etudes in all keys, based upon preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Cherry Classics Music and Jeff Reynolds are thrilled to introduce for the first time in print an excellent work for unaccompanied Bass Trombone from the 1960's by the late American composer Gregory Kosteck. Here is what Jeff Reynolds says about the Kosteck - Concert Music for Bass Trombone - unaccompanied: When I was a student, my teacher, Roger Bobo handed me the 1963 Kosteck manuscript (originally written for tuba when they both lived in Amsterdam) to have a look for my senior recital. He said it was not right for him but I might find it worthy. Worthy it was, and I went on to play it on my recital and also as the solo piece for my audition for the bass trombone chair with the L.A. Philharmonic. After playing it on the audition, conductor Zubin Mehta asked, Did you miss any notes? My response was, No. Some years later I recorded the piece on an album called The Big Trombone for Crystal Records. Also available on iTunes. The music of about 5 1/2 minutes in length is contemporary sounding in four sections: Lyrical - Scherzando - Cadenza - Lyrical and is appropriate for advanced performers. The range goes from a pedal F up to a high G above middle C. The beautiful performance on the audio sample is taken from Jeff Reynold's album The Big Trombone from Crystal Records and also available on iTunes.

Bagatelle was commissioned in 2016 by bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton as a companion piece to Pledge (2010). The piece is in A minor, and opens with a determined march-like theme shared by both instruments. The following section uses an ascending Dorian mode scale as its primary motif, before merging this theme with the opening march melody. The bass trombone and piano share equally important roles in the work. The piece is titled Bagatelle, as it is a short and unpretentious work. Shane Lamb's new work Bagatelle for Bass Trombone and Piano challenges both performers with different colors and expressive moods. About 4 minutes in length, this work is very appropriate for advanced intermediate performers. The range is modest and there is a muted section as well as a rubato cadenza-like section for the soloist.

The writing of Romanza and Scherzo was inspired by Charles Vernon, the legendary Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who asked Mr. Pierce to write something for me with lots of melodies. The work is in three sections: a brief introduction followed by the very expressive Romanza and the final Scherzo, which is light and bouncy. The music is full of LOTS OF MELODIES, has a very large range and features a challenging cadenza. About 10 minutes in length, this music is appropriate for advanced performers. This work is dedicated to George Curran, Bass Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic who performs it on his new CD, Vital Signs, available on iTunes, CD Baby and from other distributors. Below is a brief sample of this beautiful work performed by Mr. Curran.

The Sonata for Solo Flute (Wq. 132) was composed in 1747, although it was not published until 1763. This transcription is in the original key of A minor, where it lies perfectly in the bass trombone range while also playable on the tenor trombone with F attachment. The first two movements can be reversed to create a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, or played as originally published. The length of the three-movement work is about 10 minutes and is appropriate for advanced performers.
