Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes are---in a direct or wider sense---of Celtic origin, in other words, they have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view. Yet, they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation and, especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. Annotation on Aignish on the Machair. The arrangement of Aignish on the Machair illustrates, above all, the melancholic character inherent in the harmonies of the original tune. A short rubato passage is followed by several variations over the flowing melody in 3/4- time. The short triplet passages embedded in these variations are quite demanding from the technical point of view; considering the key they are written in, however, these passages are not too difficult to play.

For this arrangement, the key D minor, which is one whole tone lower than the original, has been chosen to make sure that the piece is playable, especially for a clarinet quartet.

No one ist das kompositorische Resultat der einjahrigen Studien am IRCAM, wobei sich die Anwendung des Computers lediglich auf die Kalkulation formaler und harmonischer Prozesse konzentrierte, auf die Erstellung von ,,Spielregeln, denen die Handschrift folgte. Grundgedanke war es, alle Momente der Komposition - und diese sind grundsatzlich welche der Bewegung bzw. Veranderung - in je vier verschiedenen Formungen zu reprasentieren, entsprechend der vier beteiligten Instrumente. So kommt jedem der Interpreten die Rolle eines Solisten zu, bei gleichzeitiger Einbindung in eine ubergreifende Ordnung, welche selbst wiederum in sich die Idee der polyphonen Aufspaltung tragt. Diese Polyphonie vollzieht sich auch auf der zeitlichen Ebene; der uberwiegende Verzicht auf einheitliche Taktierung intendiert ein streckenweise asynchrones Spiel, bei dem die individuelle Auslegung des Zeitverlaufes vorrangig ist, nicht die gemeinsame Fixierung durch ein ubergeordnetes metrisches Raster. So entsteht vielleicht ein Bild - von vier Reisenden, die zwar die gleichen Orte ansteuern, jedoch verschiedene Wege und Tempi wahlen, sich gelegentlich treffen, einige Schritte gemeinsam gehen, dann wieder trennen... This short, “cool†suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Deze korte suite is uitvoerbaar in elke denkbare bezetting (eventueel inclusief piano). School’s Cool is gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Yamaha Bläserklasse van de Frauenwaldschule in Nieder-Mörlen (Duitsland), ter gelegenheidvan de verhuizing naar een ander gebouw. De leerlingen van het orkest vonden de voormalige school ‘cool’, omdat ze er fijn konden musiceren. Het eerste deel straalt deze vreugde uit met een krachtige beat in driekwartsmaat. School’s Cool è un brano commissionato a Jacob de Haan per la classe di musica Essential Elements della Scuola Frauenwald di Nieder-Mörlen in Germania. This work was written for the Donaueschingen Musiktage of 1926 and given its first performance there together with Paul Hindemith's 'Konzertmusik' and Ernst Toch's 'Spiel' for wind band. Until a few years ago the score was thought to be lost. This first edition reproduces the original Version but it has been carefully extended so that it can be played by the usual combination of Instruments now found in a wind band. The work is suitable for advanced wind bands and those at the highest level, and is one of the first original compositions for this form of ensemble.Hans Gal was born in Vienna where he studied composition and musicology and then taught at the university. From 1929 until 1933 he was Director of the Musikhochschule in Mainz. He then had to return to Vienna and he emigrated to Edinburgh where he was a university lecturer and conductor.
