The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadrons Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incomingMesserschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

Music of enormous excitement and expectation - marked very animated - with brass blazing a powerful call against a tingling triplet figure in support. In Wagner's own words - awaken the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life.In a letter addressed to My dear Liszt, dated May 1852, Richard Wagner writes: It was you who awakened the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life. He was referring to a performance of his opera Lohengrin which Franz Liszt conducted at the Weirner Court Theatre on August 28, 1850. The letter was sent from Zurich, since Wagner was exiled from Germany at this time. He had completed his romantic opera, Lohengrin, some five years earlier but doubted whether he would ever hear it performed. The action takes place in Antwerp in the first half of the 10th century. Elsa and Lohengrin are to be married and the 3rd Act opens as they proceed in great splendour, accompanied by their respective noblewomen and noblemen, to the cathedral. As a Prelude to the curtain rising Wagner unleashed music of enormous excitement and expectation - marked very animated - with brass blazing a powerful call against a tingling triplet figure in support. In the opera this magnificent Prelude leads directly into the Bridal Scene as Elsa and Lohengrin make their way solemnly to the betrothal ceremony. Wagner achieves this change of mood and atmosphere most skillfully. In arranging the Prelude for concert performance the challenge was to provide an ending which provides a satisfactory climax to Wagner's blaze of instrumental colour, without proceeding to the solemn betrothal music. This was resolved by using the composer's own mighty flourish to end Act I of his opera. Now, the gauntlet is thrown down to all who perform it to - in Wagner's own words - awaken the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life..

This waltz-style piece features a gentle melody with unique harmonies to create a tranquil and mysterious mood. Perfect for the developing string orchestra, the simple rhythms are limited to mainly half notes and quarter notes, but the beautiful melody and rich countermelodies give the ensemble a mature sound. These rhythm patterns continue calmly but the main melody and the counter melodies move emotionally within the harmonies. The climax of this piece occurs at m. 43, preceded by rising and falling dynamics. Play each phase carefully to build up to the emotional peak, then as the main theme returns at m. 55, the music can be played clearly and with a “risoluto†feeling. Imagine two people dancing under wisteria throughout the piece.

These jazz arrangements of well-known hymns were written for Andrew Earis and choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London for various services and BBC broadcasts from that church. The setting of “Come down, O Love divine†supplies some new harmonic moves to Vaughan Williams' lovely tune “Down Ampneyâ€, gradually adding vocal harmony through the verses, with a short descant section in the final verse. The compound-time arrangement of “God Is Love,†which can also be sung to the supplied words of Charles Wesley's hymn “Love Divine,†again adds more of Todd's iconic jazz harmonies and textures in the vocal parts with each successive verse. The setting of “Let all mortal flesh keep silence†is structured to gradually build layers over the moody piano chords and the pedal harmony. At the end the music builds to a large climax for the text “Lord most highâ€. The hymns can be performed using the supplied piano part or using the chord symbols above. Double bass may also be used in addition to piano, again following the supplied chord symbols, and parts for optional jazz ensemble are available. Performers of these hymns should feel free to include the congregation or audience in imaginative ways.

Jan Van der Roost originally composed each and every note of ‘Slavia’ (as in case in ‘Puszta’, ‘Rikudim’ and ‘A Highland Rhapsody’). Consequently, ‘Slavia’ does not contain any arrangement of existing tunes, but is an original composition ‘in the style of…’. The introduction has an ABA structure and exposes a broad melodic line. Following a short cadenza, there is a second movement in a fast and fiery tempo. The tempi increase, gradually culminating in an exciting final climax, making this ‘Slavonic Rhapsody’ a spell-binding experience to the very last note.
