SATB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 oboes d'amore, ctto, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo SKU: CA.3113309 Cantata for the 3rd day of Christmas. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Tobias Rimek. Arranged by Paul Horn. This edition: urtext. 1x 31.133/21 oboe d'amore 1, 1x 31.133/22 oboe d'amore 2, 1x 31.133/31 cornett. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Harmony parts. Sacred vocal music, Christmas. Set of Orchestra Parts. Composed 1724. BWV 133. Duration 20 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.133/09. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3113309). ISBN 9790007207977. Language: German. The cantata Ich freue mich in dir was first performed during Bach's second year as Thomaskantor, on the 3rd day of Christmas, and belongs to the so-called annual cycle of chorale cantatas. Here the focus of the composition is the hymn of the same name by Philipp Ziegler, in which the first and final strophes were adopted, word for word, in the first and sixth movements of the cantata. The soprano, which carries the chorale, is supported by the conrnett (Zink), which already at this time had become a seldom-used instrument. The joyful, lively choral movement with instrumental interludes directly follows the first aria, and begins with a marked, ascending motive at the word Getrost! (safely). The oboes d'amore which accompany the alto lend the movement a special color. In the second aria (for soprano), Bach again shows himself to be the master of text interpretation. The words Wie lieblich klingt es in den Ohren are emphasized in an exchange between open strings and sixteenth note figures. An exceptionally clever idea, to combine the standard bugle calls into an easy march for beginning students. It is something they already know, and can be successful on right away. We are delighted to welcome composer/educator Chris Ferguson to the Carl Fischer catalog. He brings a wealth of experience working with beginners that has translated into this wonderful new march for young students. Reveille March is inspired by the bugle calls found throughout military history. The “Reveille†call is the signal used to awaken the troops for morning roll call and accompanies the raising of the flag. At the conductor’s discretion, the soli sections (measures 29 and 37) may also be performed as solos in reference to the traditional solo bugle call.“To the Color†(measure 49) is used to signal the end of a soldier’s day. It is also used when a full band is not available to render honors and commands all the same courtesies as our National Anthem. $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

WERTHER, an opera in four acts by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), found its inspiration in a novel by Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther, which in turn based its story on the actual suicide of a young man haunted with adoration for a married woman. First performed on February 16, 1892 in Vienna, it quickly reached the stage of the Theatre Lyrique in Paris but faltered due to its serious subject matter. The growing success of Massenet's opera Manon allowed it to be introduced to Germany. From there, it achieved fame in opera houses across the world. In the third act, Werther sings Pourquoi me réveiller? Published by LudwigMasters Publications (AP.36-A134702). UPC: 659359985690. English. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, in 1878. He composed the work for his longtime friend, famed violinist Joseph Joachim, who premiered it in Leipzig with the Gewandhaussaal on January 1, 1879, Brahms himself conducting. The program also included, at Joachim's insistence, Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, on which Brahms modeled his own concerto. While the critical reception of the time was mixed, the audiences at the various early performances received the work well. Most complaints directed at the concerto addressed the role of the solo violin, noting that the soloist does not offer much of the melodic material or include much in the way virtuosic passages, a consequence of looking more towards Beethoven's serious aesthetic rather than Paganini's flashy one. Joachim himself, before a falling out with the composer over personal reasons, included Brahms' concerto among the best German offered, saying: The Germans have four violin concertos. The greatest, most uncompromising is Beethoven's. The one by Brahms vies with it in seriousness. The richest, the most seductive, was written by Max Bruch. But the most inward, the heart's jewel, is Mendelssohn's. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin in set. While composed as a complete 4-movement sonata, either half may be performed alone as a 7-minute recital work. The movement titles are: I. Sprawling, burbling; II. Sparkling, glistening; III. Under Winter; and IV. Spring Spirits. When Peter Sheridan commissioned me to write a piece for bass flute and piano, his only requests were a sonata-like multi-movement work, and some kind of reference to New York, where we both grew up. Just the thought of a bass flute, with its broad and mighty airstream, already reminded me of the mighty Hudson River: from the dense woods of upstate New York, through the beautiful landscapes of New Paltz and Poughkeepsie, down through the celebrated Manhattan waterway. As I daydreamed how to build a sonata inspired by the Hudson, I thought of its deep primal nature carved by the Ice Age, and the life within the river and on its shores long before humans arrived. I thought of how the river’s magnetism drew Native Americans who honored and built their lives around it. I thought of beautiful trees and wildlife, the annual cycles of ecosystems, and the natural symbiosis between the river itself, the life within, and the life on land spawned by the river’s resources.I wondered what if Thoreau had sat by the Hudson rather than by Walden Pond; I wondered what if Hesse had set Siddhartha in the Hudson Valley with this river as his metaphor for the flow of life and time.I wondered whether the sonata should flow from north to south, or have chronological references. I wondered if I should allude to the many poets and painters who have drawn inspiration from the mighty Hudson. Every thought led to the river’s essence, its own spirit and life — flowing through raw nature, from skinny trickles to mightiness spawning cities; supporting subtle life, and becoming a central commons for human societies. The subtitle Spirit of the Hudson brings it all together.* * *The sonata is built in 4 movements, with formal inspiration from the Baroque: A slow Mvt. 1 “Sprawling, burbling†leads directly to the rapid Mvt. 2 “Sparkling, glistening,†followed by another slow-fast pair: Mvt. 3 “Under Winter†which leads directly into Mvt. 4 “Spring Spirits.†In addition to performances of the complete sonata, either pair of movements may be performed on its own for a shorter concert segment.SONATA (SPIRIT OF THE HUDSON) was premiered at the International Low Flutes Festival in April 2018 by its commissioner, bass flutist Peter Sheridan, with Hyeeun Hahm as pianist. $21.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

The ambitious late work of Georg Philipp Telemann, consciously dedicated to vocal composition, begins with the Donner-Ode (1756/1760). As a symbol thunder represents the forces of nature, here in close connection to the traumatic earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The characteristic arrangement of the vocal parts and the scoring with three trumpets, the soloistic use of the timpani and instrumental ensemble made this avant-garde work popular and well known already during the composer's lifetime. The new edition presented here takes into consideration important, newly discovered sources such as the autograph of the first part.
