In 1969 I was teaching music at Cranleigh School in Surrey. I was asked to write a work for the orchestra and produced a four-movement piece entitled Concerto for School Orchestra. I have now reworked the music for wind band and re-titled it Perchance to Dream. the piece has a slow introduction followed by a loose sonata form movement in which the introductory material is reintroduced.

This nine-movement psalm composition allows all the participants to shine, in some cases with rich virtuosity: the string ensemble in the opening Sonata; the solo singers and choir in the chaconne-like first vocal movement, Singet dem Herrn; also the solo singers in two duets (alto + tenor, soprano + alto), an alto solo and an extensive bass solo; the choir in two further movements - a fugue on the 6th verse of the psalm Es stehet herrlich und prachtig fur ihm and the concluding movement in two sections, Betet an den Herrn, which ends with a brilliant fugue on Es furchte ihn alle Welt. This is a festive sacred work suitable for many occasions (including weekday Epiphany psalm services and for services on the 4th Sunday after Easter). A sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and music director Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772-1840) orchestrated the first movement of the famous Moonlight Sonata' by Beethoven (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin mass. The result is as astounding as it is harmonious! Versions for choir and organ, and choir and piano (both like the original version in C sharp minor) are also available (Carus 28.009/45 and in 28.009/03). This three-movement solo cantata can be performed in several ways. The instruments basically required are the trio sonata ensemble of recorder, oboe and keyboard instrument (+ a continuo melody instrument ad lib.). If necessary, as Telemann stated, the two woodwind parts can be placed by violins. The instrumental parts can also be augmented by a body of strings, playing in the ritornello sections of the two arias. Moreover, the new edition expands the performance possibilities for the work by adding a four-part chorus from the more fully scored original version, which Telemann did not publish.
