The biting dissonance of the sharp 9 chord is used as the centerpiece for this free spirited, funky rock chart. Cutting, angular lines and interesting counterpoint come together to create a unique piece in the repertoire for music at this level. It is surprisingly sophisticated with just the right amount of grit to warrant the title.

Mompou wrote the Suite compostelana (1962) in the context of his heightened professional rapport with Andrés Segovia. This is one of the most significant works written for and dedicated to Andrés Segovia; not surprisingly so, given that the Andalusian guitarist's principal characteristics were the evocative beauty and variety of his sound, in perfect accord therefore with the artistic exploration Mompou cultivated throughout his entire life.

Bel Piacere (Countless Pleasures) is a song from the opera Rinaldo. It has been arranged for SATB choir by Stanford Robinson, with the words translated into Enlgish by Geoffrey Dunn. A Piano reduction is provided for rehearsal purposes.
G F Handel (1685-1759) was a German-born British composer and organist who spent his life working in London. He is credited with popularising opera in Britain, both importing Italian works, and composing his own. Rinaldo was composed in 1711, and was the first opera written in Italian for the London stage. The libretto was written by the Italian poet Giacomo Rossi.

Piano Quintet op.34 is no doubt Zar bski's finest work, written in 1885. Advanced harmony, richness of colour and an enterprising use of rhythm, as well as the full exploitation of the piano and its skilful blending with the strings, combine to make it one of the most remarkable Polish chamber works of the second half of the 19th century.

Jesu, meine Freude was composed sometime between 1723 and 1727, most likely for the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. It is the longest and most musically complex of Bach's six motets, originally for 5-part choir comprising eleven movements. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for 8-part Trombone ensemble of eleven movements is about 19 minutes in length. Because of its length, it is possible to divide the music into three sections and perform each section separately. This music is appropriate for advanced performers. The top two voices have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

This piece was composed in 2009 for a commission by Shinjuku Bunka Center to commemorate its thirty years since its opening. It is an impressive work with a brilliant, bright fanfare, and the stately sound of the church organ reverberating through the concert hall. The first performance was given by Hiroko Takahashi, a house organist of the center, with Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra conducted by Shigeto Ishizu. Original works for church organ and wind orchestra are surprisingly scarce. This is a fresh opening piece, to be followed by an organ solo which might lead to a march.

Pleyel was one of the most popular and prolific composers in western Europe at the turn of the nineteenth century. This symphony, composed in 1791, represents a grandiose gesture to his teacher Haydn, since the Adagio second movement and the Finale are clearly related to his music. A dramatic first movement and a surprisingly rich Minuet and Trio complete this striking work, written for London's Professional Concerts society.

A contemporary sounding rock tune that sounds much more difficult than it is. Includes a very well written, yet surprisingly easy, keyboard part that will sound great when performed on an electric piano or synthesizer and an optional auxillary percussion part that utilizes wind chimes, shaker and cowbell to great effect. An exceptional chart for young bands on their way up.

This beautiful and tentative work for viol consort is based on a Purcell Fantasia of the same name. Occasionally, and to great effect, Bryars enhances the rich, romantic sound of bowed viols with the use of pizzicato and harmonics, highlighting the distance between this mesmerising piece and its origin.

A positive force in the Montana music landscape, pianist Steven Hesla requested a new piano concerto from Maslanka, which could be played with better high school ensembles around the state. Maslanka wrote Concerto No. 2, also in five movements, each movement arising out of a backdrop of inspiration, to meet that request. Hesla recorded the concerto on Naxos with the Illinois State University Wind Symphony. See a YouTube performance by Uschi Reifenberg (pno.) and Sinfonisches Blasorchester Mannheim with Tobias Mahl conducting.
