This chart was originally written for Charlie Parker to perform with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Eventually it was recorded by Lee Konitz. The ensemble writing is very playable with no range concerns in the brass. If you have a great alto saxophone player (the solo is mostly chord symbols), this is an easy tune to put together with your band and will be a spectacular addition to any concert program. 5-5-5-3.

Here is a terrific medium-tempo shuffle chart that the Buddy Rich Band played all the time. It was recorded on the Swingin' New Big Band album (CD available from Sierra Music), and has wide open blowing space in the blues format. A great shout chorus finishes off this exciting, swinging chart from Oliver Nelson. 5-4-4-3.

Get out those plungers and let the fun begin! This hot chart has a great uptempo swing feel and the novel plunger effects in the brass give it a unique sound! Includes an open solo section for the soloist of your choice and written solo suggestions are also furnished. Range are reasonable and Larry's great scoring gives it a big solid sound even with bands of limited instrumentation. The concluding shout chorus starts soft, then brings down the house. Can't be beat!

This is a lovely, cool, easy-swing chart that explores linear material as written for and recorded by the North Texas One O'clock Lab Band (Lab 2013). Flute and bass clarinet doubles are required, and the drummer is featured throughout with brushes. This piece has the feel of a theme and variations, and contains very rich harmonies and voicings. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Heidi' is the 3rd movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. A gorgeous solo feature for alto saxophone throughout, this piece builds from a quiet beginning to a very powerful point (a 'Bolero' type of tension as the piece develops) before it diminishes to a quiet ending. This 'edited' version is in a lower key, has a shorter solo section and simpler brass ranges, making it more playable for both the soloist and the ensemble while still maintaining the integrity of Oliver's beautiful ballad. 5-4-4-3.

This is one of those superb Holman charts written for Stan Kenton in the early '50's that just swings like crazy. It starts off very soft and easy, with clever linear writing. It then roars into an alto sax solo, to be followed by a trumpet solo. A key change brings the chart to a great shout section before returning to the soft opening for a moment. Finishes easy and nice. A great chart! 5-5-5-4.

Shades opens with a drum solo (brushes on snare) in a medium tempo and swings on from there. There is a trombone, alto saxophone and piano solo in this first movement. There are also drum solos which are interspersed with wonderful ensemble phrases. This chart romps from beginning to end! 5-4-4-3.

This is another great Oliver Nelson chart (it swings like crazy!). It starts in 3/4 and then goes to 4/4 and has a wonderful feel and flow as it moves through the different sections. The piece has very limited brass ranges with some optional octave writing in the trumpet 1 part. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This big band arrangement was adapted by Bob Curnow from the original small band version as recorded on Oliver Nelson Plays Michelle (Impulse). 5-4-4-4.

Bill Holman wrote some of the best music played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Boop Boo Be Doop is surely one of those charts. The melody is scored for four horns within the big band setting, and those four horns (alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone) are also the featured soloists. As recorded on The Concepts Era - Live!, this chart represents Holman's ability to write swinging, exciting music for big band. 5-5-5-3.

Bill Holman's Great Big Band was a sensational ensemble! That album has just been re-issued on Mosaic Records. This chart is an example of Bill's talent for investing old material with brilliant new ideas. It originally featured Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Conte Candoli on trumpet solos. This is surely one of Gershwin's most beautiful melodies, and Potts arranged it to feature trumpet throughout (as recorded on the 1959 album The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess, featuring the Bill Potts Big Band) . Lush orchestration, rich harmonies, reasonable ranges and a touching ending make this chart a great choice for festival programming. This should be in every big band book. 5-5-5-4.
