Bill Holman's Great Big Band was a sensational ensemble! That album has just been re-issued on Mosaic Records. This chart is an example of Bill's talent for investing old material with brilliant new ideas. It originally featured Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Conte Candoli on trumpet solos. An exciting, amazingly fresh, inventive chart. Recorded on the Bill Holman's Great Big Band CD. 5-4-4-3.

Smooth-out the bumps in your concert! This bluesy, minor-key shuffle features infectious unison riffs contrasted with hard-hitting ensemble sections, over a really swinging groove. An open section provides ample opportunity for your soloists (suggested solos are included). The Maynard Ferguson Band performed a lot of Abene's charts over the years. This chart is an excellent example of Abene's very musical approach to a great jazz standard. Very reasonable ranges throughout. Features tenor sax, trumpet and trombone solos. Destined to be a best-seller! Printed as originally scored (4-4-2-3), but including extra parts for a standard 5-4-4-4 instrumentation. This one burns!

This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD Swingin' the Blues. Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble shout choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. You will have a blast with this one. 5-4-4-4.
