The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. Philip Harper has created a fabulous transcription of the energetic third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano concerto No. 3 in D minor. This movement is comprised of variations on a theme from the first movement of the concerto. The final notes would become Rachmaninoff’s musical signature. An outstanding and very spectacular title!

Philip Harper heeft hiermee een magnifieke transcriptie van het energieke derde deel van Rachmaninovs pianoconcert nr. 3 in d-klein gecreëerd. Dit deel bestaat uit variaties op een thema uit het eerste deel van het concert. De laatste noten zouden Rachmaninovs muzikale handtekening worden. Een geweldig, spectaculair stuk!

Philip Harper schuf eine fantastische Bearbeitung des schwungvollen 3. Satzes aus Rachmaninows Klavierkonzert Nr. 3 in d-Moll. Dieser Satz besteht aus Variationen über ein Thema aus dem 1. Satz des Konzertes. Die Schlusstöne sollten Rachmaninows musikalisches Erkennungszeichen werden. Ein außergewöhnlicher, fantastischer Titel!

Philip Harper a créé une transcription formidable de l’énergétique troisième mouvement du Concerto pour piano no.3 en ré mineur de Rachmaninoff. Ce mouvement comprend des variations sur un thème du premier mouvement de ce concerto. Les dernières notes deviendront la signature musicale de Rachmaninoff. This 1994 song of Billy Joel is probably one of his most beautiful hits ever. It was originally intended as a prelude for another song ‘River of Dreams’ with lyrics in Latin. Philip Harper has created a magnificent arrangement for either two flugelhorns or two cornets.

Dit lied van Billy Joel uit 1994 is waarschijnlijk een van zijn mooiste hits ooit. Het was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als opmaat voor een ander nummer River of Dreams met teksten in het Latijn. Philip Harper maakte er een prachtig arrangement van met solo voor twee bugels of twee cornetten en 3 trombones.

Dieses Lied aus dem Jahre 1994 von Billy Joel gehört sicherlich zu seinen schönsten Hits. Es war ursprünglich als Vorspiel zu dem Lied River of Dreams (Fluss der Träume“) mit einem lateinischen Text vorgesehen. Philip Harpers hat das Stück großartig für zwei Flügelhörner oder für zwei Cornets arrangiert.

Cette chanson de Billy Joel datant de 1994 est probablement l’un de ses plus beaux tubes. Son intention de départ était d’en faire un prélude pour une autre chanson, River of Dreams, avec des paroles en latin. Philip Harper en a fait unsuperbe arrangement pour deux bugles ou cornets.

The traditional concert march Liberty, was composed in 2004 for the brass band Euphonia from Wolvega, the Netherlands. Your band will feel truly liberated with this lively composition.

Liberty is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm. Het eerste deel bevat naast een beweeglijk thema een aansprekende bassolo. Na de bassolo komt het eerste thema weer naar voren en wordt, na een krachtige afsluiting, hettrio ingeleid. Een lange, lyrische melodie in de tenorgroep laat vervolgens het publiek even achteroverleunen en genieten. Ze wordt echter bruusk onderbroken door een wilde fortissimopassage, gekenmerkt door een lange toonladderdie door het hele orkest heen loopt. Deze mondt uit in een welluidend Grandioso met een herhaling van de lyrische melodie, omspeeld in de discant, waarmee Liberty besluit.

In Liberty wird ein lebhaftes Thema im ersten Teil von einem anspruchsvollen Solo für den Bass und die gesamte Brass Band abgelöst. Nach dem Trio mit einer ausgesprochen lyrischen Melodie und heftigen Fortissimo-Passagen beendet ein reizvolles Grandioso dieses Stück, das in traditioneller Marschform geschrieben, aber alles andere als gewöhnlich ist.

Liberty est une marche contrastante de forme traditionnelle. La première partie développe un thème pétillant qui se fond dans un solo de basse solidement charpenté. Le trio, plus lyrique, expose quelques nouvelles idées formant un contraste marqué avec le passage d’ouverture. La musique s’enflamme pour un énoncé en fortissimo qui chemine travers l’ensemble de l’orchestre puis cède sa place un thème Grandioso, dernier épisode de l’œuvre.

Fort Fincastle was built in 1793 by royal governor 'Lord Dunmore at an unusual location: Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.
The name of the fort: Fort Fincastle' comes from Dunmore's second title of Viscount Fincastle '( Earl of Fincastle).
He gave the fort a particular shape, a circular building with a sharp expansion in the form of a bow or bow of ship. In order to deceive enemy ships.

De naam van het fort: ‘Fort Fincastle’ is afkomstig van Dunmore’s tweede titel ‘Viscount Fincastle’(Graafvan Fincastle).
Hij gaf het fort een bijzonder vorm, een cirkelvormig gebouw met een puntige uitbouw, in de vorm van een boeg of voorsteven van schip. Dit om vijandige schepen te misleiden.
De klanken van de eerstematen laten de contouren van een majestueus verdedigingsbolwerk opdoemen, waarna een heldhaftig thema volgt. Al snel horen we de dreiging van vijandige elementen .
Werken op het fort betekent veel wachten en is best eenzaam,toch moet je altijd alert en waakzaam zijn voor de immer op de loer liggende aanval.
Na het afslaan van de zoveelste aanval heerst er een gevoel van tevredenheid en zien we het fort trots liggen op de heuvel die bovenNassau uit torent.
