A mirage is an illusion, something without substance that does not really exist. Although not real, its unattainable nature is perfect for musical inspiration. Composer Jacob de Haan was strolling through a picturesque forest of the Dutch Gelderland when he thought he saw a body of water. While there was no water, its mere image created waves that can be relived in De Haan's original composition, Mirage. Mirage is het Engelse synoniem voor 'Fata Morgana'. De creatieve aanleiding voor deze compositie was dan ook het verhaal van een wandelaar die in een boslandschap in Gelderland water denkt te zien. A vous de le decouvrir. Ce qui est sur, c'est que le Theme de la promenade (Trio) est partiellement chante. Una sorta di miraggio ha ispirato Jacob de Haan a comporre questo brano, prendendo spunto appunto da un miraggio di uno specchio d'acqua che gli si e presentato durante una passeggiata in una foresta in Olanda. Il tema della passeggiata parzialmente cantato nel trio, enfatizza gli spettacoli che la natura ci offre.

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an ad libitum organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand.Dieses ruhige Stück mit seinen breiten Tönen wurde ursprünglich für Brass Band geschrieben, im Auftrag von Robert Leveugle, dem Vorsitzenden der Brass Band, dem der Komponist angehört: die Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgien). On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns. Originally composed for solo organ, Hailstork’s fanfare is a 3½-minute explosion of joyous sound inspired by the Baroque-era tradition of Chorale Preludes. As in Bach’s organ preludes, the familiar hymn’s phrases broadly emerge from ornate counterpoint, here in the form of brass fanfares. The result is exhilarating! Also scored by Hailstork for chamber ensemble and for orchestra, FANFARE ON AMAZING GRACE was transcribed for concert band in January 2021 by MGySgt Don Patterson, staff arranger for “The President’s Own†United States Military Band, for that ensemble’s worldwide broadcast performance at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.

Otto M. Schwarz composed Fire & Ice for a symphonic rock project commissioned by the national music schools of the Austrian cities of Imst and Pitztal. In these cities, winter tourism plays an important role in the economy with spectacular weekly displays by winter sportsmen and women. The performances of the freestyle acrobats take place in the evening and draw huge crowds. Using torches and other pyrotechnics, these acrobats entertain the audience by means of fire, lights, snow, ice and acrobatics. This piece makes a perfect opening or final work for any concert. WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016 Raveling, Unraveling - In Search of 'La Valse' was written for the Cory Band as their own-choicetest piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparkes The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band, and the use of Ravels La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparkes aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composers view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.

The BAND TIME series consists of a number of books containing easy pieces suitable for youth band. BAND TIME Starter is intended for the first year of band playing and includes four-part pieces in many different styles. The difficulty of the pieces increases in parallel with the material covered in the first part of the Look, Listen & Learn method. The first three works, however, are three-part pieces in order to accommodate the limited range of notes available at this stage. The BAND TIME series is suitable for various combinations of instruments provided that the parts are divided in a sensible way (for concert band, fanfare band or brass band). The material for altosaxophone, trombone and baritone/euphonium/bass clarinet is divided into parts 1 and 2 in order to cover all voices using the most popular instruments. The series Band Time is based on the successful method Look, Listen & Learn. Three Aspects of Kurt Weill (“Trois impressions divertissantes de Kurt Weillâ€) développe un thèmerécurrent exposé dans trois climats musicaux différents qui correspondent aux trois étapes de la vie de Weill.Le premier mouvement est une marche protestataire “aux accents berlinois†qui parodie l’utilisation de la musique sous le fascisme. Les trompettes ont le premier rôle. Le second mouvement chemine sur une valse musette toute parisienne qui fait la part belle au saxophone alto et l’accordéon. Le troisième et dernier mouvement développe le thème dans une trame swing typique du Big Band. Votre formation se métamorphose en un grand orchestre digne de Broadway !
