EUGENE ONEGIN, based on a verse-novel by Alexander Pushkin, is Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) best-known opera. The story depicts the life of the titular Onegin, a Russian dandy who does not understand himself, his emotions, or the value of life, leading him to reject an impassioned declaration of love by a woman he looks down upon and instead pursue the fiancée of his friend, who he kills in a duel as a result of this pursuit. The provincial WALTZ, brought here to a higher level of sophistication by Tchaikovsky, is performed at the ball honoring Tatyana's name day at the beginning of Act II. Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida’s involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

De opdracht markeerde tevens het vijftigste jaar dat Yutaka Nishida al actief was met blaasorkesten als muzikant, dirigent en radiopresentator. Song of Friendship est une commande de l’orchestre d’harmonie de l’Université de Jumonji, Saitama, Japon, et de leur chef Yutaka Nishida. La commande marque aussi la 50e année de l’engagement de Yutaka Nishida avec des bands, que ce soit comme joueur, chef d’orchestre ou présentateur radio. Le cérémonial Song of Friendship commence par une longue fanfare, mettant en scène en particulier les cuivres. Ceci nous mène au thème principal qui se développe ensuite graduellement jusqu’ une interprétation par l’ensemble entier. Une modulation signale le début de la section centrale contrastante. Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections.  This fanfare composition would be perfect for opening a concert. It has bold brass fanfare figures over textural woodwinds to start and then takes the listener on a sonic journey through a variation of harmonic colors, tambural and textural shifts.

The first, a rather celebratory and triumphant fanfare in Bb major begins with the upper woodwinds and percussion creating a sound-screen, that is a busy texture consisting of a flurry of repeated notes over which the horns and alto saxophones present the opening theme. The sound-screen should be carefully balanced and give way to the melody at m. 5, which should be played extremely marcato. The timpani solo beginning in m. 11 must not be understated. A brief percussion interlude separates a restatement of the opening theme, this time with the addition of the trumpet, tenor saxophone, and euphonium, and a counter melody by the low winds. The percussion interlude is playful, light, but full of vigor and energy. An Ab in the low winds pulls the harmony towards G minor in m. 40 to start the second section, a more serious fanfare. Here, the marimba repeats an ostinato that is complemented by the bass drum and woodblock. The upper woodwinds with the xylophone and snare drum dance over the stern secondary fanfare. A longing call lead by the trombones, interrupted by a subtle snare drum beckons to the clarinets and horn who begin the third section of the piece at m. 68. This haunting melody in C minor is legato, and starkly contrasts all which came before it. A relentless concert tom-tom played with hard mallets keeps the momentum persistent, and a heartbeat-like pulse is felt from the tuba and baritone saxophone. The melody rises towards m. 84 when the brass harken back to the fanfare style before fading back into another lush woodwind strain.A recapitulation of the low winds’ call is heard at m. 100 which in this occasion intensifies into an emphatic statement by the battery percussion instruments. Now in Eb major, the opening fanfare theme is heard again once more before fading into the beginning of the piece’s conclusion.To end, the counter melody from the opening section duels with chromatic tension above before swelling to an arrival in the original key of Bb major. The full ensemble celebrates the piece’s resolution, and after a few crunchy power chords the journey is completed.

Normalerweise wird Filmmusik anhand eines Drehbuchs geschrieben. Dass es auch andersherum funktioniert, beweist Jacob de Haan mit seinem Werk La Storia. Ohne eine bestimmt Geschichte zu erzählen, liefert er spannende Musik, zu der sich kreative Musiker und Zuhörer selbst etwas ausdenken können. Jacob de Haan widmete La Storia einem der berühmtesten Filmmusikkomponisten überhaupt - dem Italiener Ennio Morricone...

En général la musique de film est composée partir et en fonction des événements qui se produisent dans l’intrigue du scénario. L’inverse est plutôt rare mais Jacob de Haan parvient nous démontrer le contraire avec La Storia. Sans jamais nous livrer des éléments de l'intrigue, il nous propose environ sept minutes de musique intense. Par conséquent, l’œuvre fait appel l’imagination individuelle ; chacun d’entre nous étant libre de créer son propre scénario partir de ce qu’il entend. Avec La Storia Jacob de Haan rend hommage au maître italien de la musique de film : Ennio Morricone.

This work was commissioned by the All Japan Band Association (Chiba Prefecture) to commemorate their 45th anniversary. The composer, Satoshi Yagisawa, was requested to write a march that was easy enough for junior high school students to play, and was based on the folk songs in Chiba Prefecture. After several months of research the composer finally discovered Boushu Oiwake, a lyrical folk song sung with the Japanese bamboo flute and shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument). After the composition process has been completed we have here a fantastic triumphant march sure to ?raise the roof? at any performance.

Dit werk is gebaseerd op de volksmuziek uit de Chiba-prefectuur. Aanvankelijk was het erg moeilijk om een geschikt volkslied te vinden voor een mars, maar na een aantal maanden zoeken ontdekte de componist Boushu Oiwake, eenlyrisch volkslied voor zang, de Japanse bamboefluit en de shamisen (een Japans instrument met drie snaren). Hij bouwde de mars op volgens zijn eigen muzikale ideeën met als basis het betreffende volkslied. De expressie varieert,afhankelijk van de tempi en de interpretaties van passages. Geef uw orkest de mogelijkheid om een unieke uitvoering van March-Bou-Shu te geven.

Der japanische Komponist Satoshi Yagisawa kreierte March-Bou- Shu in seiner eigenen Tonsprache, unter Verwendung eines Volksliedes aus seiner Heimat, dem Regierungsbezirk Chiba. Die Aufführung des Stückes gewinnt durch die Auslotung der ursprünglichen Spielweise des Liedes. Die verschiedenen Spielweisen variieren je nach Tempo und Interpretation einzelner Passagen und erlauben Ihrem Blasorchester ganz individuelle Spielweisen zu entwickeln.

Trouver une mélodie traditionnelle qui puisse convenir au style d’une marche ne fut pas chose facile. Après plusieurs mois de recherches, le compositeur découvre finalement la mélodie Boushu Oiwake, un chant traditionnel extrêmement mélodieux accompagné par une fl te en bambou et un shamisen (luth trois cordes). March-Bou-Shu trouve son sens dans l’expression musicale propre au compositeur. Votre interprétation trouvera son originalité dans le choix des tempi et l’expressivité des passages.

Dopo parecchi mesi di ricerca, il compositore scopre la melodia Boushu Oiwake, un canto tradizionale molto melodioso accompagnato da un flauto in bambu e da un shamisen (liuto a tre corde).
