Moving Heaven and Earth was commissioned by the Clark County School District Commissioning Project, Las Vegas, NV, USA and is dedicated to Bunny Wasserman and her Make Music Matter, Las Vegas foundation, in appreciation of her tireless work in support of music education. It was premiered in January 2012, conducted by Col. John R. Bourgeois. The piece consists of a theme and 4 variations; although the theme is original it contains a phrase heavily influenced by a 14-bar passage from the Libera Me in Fauré’s Requiem. It is a sequence that the composer finds harmonically compelling and, although it is never quoted directly, it appears in altered form in thetheme and each of the variations. In the original, the passage is set to the words: Quando cæli movendi sunt et terra (When the heavens and the earth shall be moved) which gave inspiration for the title. After the initial statement of the theme, Variation 1 features the upper woodwinds who play a stirring melody and accompany the Fauré reference with florid arpeggios. Variation 2 spotlights the saxophones and lower woodwind in a rhythmic, modal waltz, whilst Variation 3 is a broad chorale for the brass and percussion. Variation 4 starts with a fugue, which introduces each section of the band in turn before the original theme appears on the brass while the woodwind continue the fugal figuration. Moving Heaven and Earth wurde vom Schulbezirksverband in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) in Auftrag gegeben.

The Heaven Tree is based on the fi rst book in an intensely imagined trilogy by author Edith Pargeter. Set during the golden age of cathedral building, this adventure novel explores the splendour and cruelty of the Middle Ages. Thierry Deleruyelle’s work is an ideal accompaniment to the novel. With an obvious sense of suspense, his music helps us get in touch with a distant reality that brings the past to life. The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close. The Way to Heaven is geschreven in opdracht van de Britse Royal Air Force Music Services. The Way to Heaven wurde von den Royal Air Force Music Services in Auftrag gegeben. Beautiful and touching, Heaven's Light is one of Steven Reineke's most popular works. This arrangement by Rob Romeyn has been skillfully adapted for the Barnhouse Command series to better fit less-experienced bands with limited instrumentation. The full effect and sensitivity of the original remains. We are excited to offer this fine arrangement of the Reineke classic – an outstanding choice for any concert performance.

Opening with a lush flute soli, Into Heaven’s Hands explodes with power, emotion and jubilation in celebration of a beautiful life. The powerful opening gives way to a lyrical and whimsical faster section. David Shaffer’s mastery of intricate harmonic progression is on full display throughout this work. A slower, lyrical middle section compliments the entire piece with a balance of pure musical emotion. The percussion writing is simple but very effective in producing an exciting and musical experience for both the players and the listeners. An excellent choice for contest or festival!

Based on the shaped note melody Saints Bound For Heaven, Jubilee by James Curnow captures a feeling of joyful celebration through a series of unique and skillfully adapted variations. The opening strains are actually fragments of the first variation and occur before the main tune is introduced by low brass and woodwinds. The second variation features a euphonium solo and builds to a glorious climax with the full ensemble. The final variation is joyful and filled with energy, using flourishes in the woodwinds and fanfares in the brass for a grand conclusion to this marvelous work. (Grade 3.5) Dur: 5:30.

Where the Heavens Meet Earth is a beautiful, lyrical work for young band. Featuring flowing melodic lines and a beautiful four-note motive that transfers throughout the ensemble, the piece is a perfect mid-program work to feature the colors of the different instrumental sections, permitting opportunities to teach about blend and balance within the group. This original Jeremy Bell piece was inspired by the picturesque salt flats in Bolivia called Salar de Uyuni. Located in the Southwest near the Andes, the flats were formed by the transformations of several prehistoric lakes. With variations in elevation that average around a meter, the extreme flatness following a rain turns the 80-mile landscape into the world's largest mirror, reflecting the sky above. (3:30).

Psalm XIX: The Heavens Declare was written by the Italian composer, writer, and theorist Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). By profession Marcello served as a governor and chamber-lain in Italy, although he is well-known for his harsh satires of contemporary coposers, such as Vivaldi and Lotti, As a composer, Marcello was ingenious and imaginative; his works include opera librettos, concertos, vocal music, and psalm settings in cantana style. This particular psalm setting has become popular for organ, and, thanks to the talent of arranger Barry Toombs, is part of the repertoire of the Westwind Brass. Mr. Toombs's brass quintet arrangement of The Heavens Declare calls for the optional B Piccolo Trumpet in the 1st Trumpet part. It is preferred that the 1st trumpet player use a piccolo trumpet. However, if one is not available, B trumpet may be uses as a substitute.
