Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of 'faith' ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the 'Luther rose' which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, 'white' is the colour of angels and ghosts, 'black' stands for the pain of crucification: 'The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified.' But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The 'Danse macabre' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale 'Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen' from 1524 ('Enchiridion' from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant 'Media vita in morte sumus' created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, 'I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen', are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a 'perpetuum mobile', i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The 'Mighty Fortress', on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the 'Marseille anthem of the Reformation', Friedrich Engels the 'Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars'. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant 'birdcall version' of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the 'ideals of freedom of Christians'.'/ Répertoire / Orgue

Description For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Ca...

Description For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem No. 2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem No. 1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous; a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him'; and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. For six-part chorus of mixed voices with organ or piano accompaniment. Edited and with keyboard reduction by William Herrman. Songlist The King Shall Rejoice

Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 6 Clavierübung III / Schübler-Choräle / Canonische Veränderungen über 'Vom Himmel hoch' - ed. by Werner Breig Bach Organ Works Printed During the Composer's Lifetime Volume 6 contains the chorale-related organ works that Bach personally had printed: the Dritte Theil der Clavier Übung was published (for organists) in 1739; the Sechs Choräle von verschiedener Art (Schübler-Choräle) and the Canonische Veränderungen were released in separate editions most likely in 1747/48. None of these collections had from the start the appearance which the composer considered as valid in the end. For this reason, Werner Breig focuses in particular on questions of origin in his introduction. Fundamental findings on the genesis of the Clavier Übung III were made only after the publication of the work in the Neue Bach-Ausgabe. The basically unproblematic state of the sources means that this volume contains no CD-ROM with supplementary materials. It was, however, considered editorially necessary to print the Canonische Veränderungen BWV 769 in three versions: as a facsimile of the original print, in a practical arrangement, and in the autograph version (BWV 769a). Composed by Jehan Alain Trois Pièces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for Organ with pedal-use. The first piece “Variations sur un thème de Clément Jannequin” (Variations on a Clément Jannequin’s tune“ should be played “in the same way as Couperin’s Préludes: freshly and softly”. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso Maggiore Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called “Le jardin suspendu” (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can’t be played separately. Thelast piece “Litanies” is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in Vivo is played only by the right hand then followed by a “Lirico ma sempre vivo” part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some Vivacissimo parts sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupré and Roger Ducasse among others he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is 'Litanies'.

Cradle Song-Vuggesang / Cradle Song for Organ solo by Peter Bruun (2016). The piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. Dedicated to Vibeke Vanggaard. 'Peter Bruun's cradle song Vuggesang is an inventive and refreshingly unconventional set of variations on 'Vom Himmel Hoch'. There are some fascinating textures here and the whole thing is a far cry from a dutiful neo-classical perusal of stock partita motifs - the crystalline final variation which disappears into nothing in the final bars is especially striking. Numerous rhythmic complexities throughout the score will need thought but the piece will reward thediligent.' - Stephen Farr Choir & Organ Magazine 'Organ music makes up only a small part of Danish composer Peter Bruun’s (b. 1968) varied output. Nonetheless Vuggesang (‘Cradle Song’) from 2016 is idiomatically and sympathetically written for the organ: a series of five variations on Luther’s hymn Vom Himmel hoch that affords variety of texture colour and mood. A clear head is needed to negotiate some of the rhythmic complexities but this is a fine work for the Christmas season that will reward performer and listener.' - Sunday by Sunday

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach?s authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes? text sections. The situation of the chorale partitas is not quite so dramatic, whereby these holdings also had to be subdivided for reasons of transmission into mainsection, appendix, and online presentation. The so called ?Neumeister-Choräle? are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ?Neumeister-Sammlung? should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. / Date parution : 2021-11-25/ Recueil / Orgue

The organ part and reduced score Symphony No. 4 - An Organ Symphony (2008) by Poul Ruders. Full score: WH31186 Orch. parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk Preface / Programme Note When introducing a large-scale symphonic work not only as a symphony but as an organ symphony it would be impossible not to think of and perhaps compare it with Camille Saint-Saëns’s famous SYMPHONY NO. 3 popularly known as the Organ Symphony. Well that is a risk I am prepared to take – and live with the consequences.Saint-Saëns however listed his work as a symphony avec/withorgan. The organ only appears in two out of the four sections of thepiece. In my symphony the instrument plays a far more significant part and is featured in all four movements. But it is not a concerto for organ and orchestra rather a symphony with organo obligato - a symphony with an organ part of a soloistic nature. So an Organ Symphony it is. The first movement PRELUDE is exactly that: a foreplay to what is in store for the rest of the symphony. It is slow (very slow!) and predominantly hushed: the organ and the orchestra wake up side-by-side getting to know one another. The second movement CORTÈGE is a slowly moving processional and it evokes extreme solemnity and austerity. Later on the music takes flight and the atmosphere lightens considerably a far more playful music emerging. This leads to the third movement ETUDE an exercise in instrumental virtuosity and technical challenge. The fourth and last movement is called CHACONNE but I could just as well have named it passacaglia (the definition of those two terms seems to blur even among the learned). Bearing in mind the last movement of Johannes Brahms´s SYMPHONY NO.4 which is universally agreed on as being a passacaglia I chose to avoid the Wrath of the Gods and opted for

Par JOHANNSEN KAY. 'The Great Wall? developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a 'storm? fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Mühleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's 'Bolero? at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences./ Répertoire / Orgue

from the Opera 'Tannhauser'-During his time in Weimar (1848 1861) Liszt developed a then entirely new organ style which stands out for both orchestral and pianistic elements. Together with the choirmaster Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg (1827 1908) from Tiefurt he regularly initiated so-called 'organ conferences'. And it was at the suggestion of Gottschalg that the present arrangement of the Pilgrim's Choir from the opera 'Tannhäuser' was written. With his version for organ Liszt by means of this example laid the foundations for the (not always undisputed) tradition extending to the present day of organ transcriptions from the operas of Wagner. 'Organistic' elements in the Pilgrims' Choir are theclassical chorale theme the solemn 'sacred' atmosphere of the solemn tempo as well as the expressive cantability. The linear intensification from the antiphonal-organ-like piano dolce of the beginning to the 'full organ' can be realized in a convincing manner with an orchestrally conceived three-manual organ with the sensitive use of the swell box and the successive seamless build-up of the crescendo pedal being of particular significance. Important repertoire piece marking the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner in 2013.

Complete Organ Works Volume 4 (Urtext edition)-Louis Vierne (1870 1937) raised the Organ symphony to its stylistic zenith. One of his pupils Marcel Dupré was the teacher of Thierry Escaich the co-editor of this complete edition.Vierne?s Symphony No.4 is one of the most important works in the Organ repertoire. Until now it was thought to have originated during the three months of summer 1914. However the editor has discovered a letter from Vierne dated 23 June 1914 that disproves any connection with events of war. As a result the work has been chronologically reclassified leading to its fresh assessment and interpretation see the detailed Foreword inthis new edition for further information. The registration of this seminal work in the Organ literature is in parts reminiscent of César Franck?s Chorale in B minor. In general terms Franck?s influence was already singled out by reviewers of the first performance.Detailed trilingual preface (Fr/Eng/Ger) with a full account of the work?s genesis and notes on performance practice.Comprehensive Critical Commentary (Fr/Eng/Ger)New source materialMany illustrations and facsimile pages

The large-scale partitas Op.8 Nos.1 and 2. Hugo Distler studied Organ with Günther Ramin and composition with Hermann Grabner in Leipzig. He then worked as cantor and organist at St. Jacobi in Lübeck and taught composition and Organ at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule from 1937 onwards. In 1940 he took up the same position at the Berlin Musikhochschule and also became director of the Berlin Cathedral Choir in 1941. Considerably influenced by the Lübeck Stellwagen organ at St. Jacobi he championed the characteristic pre-Baroque and Baroque sound of the organ and the forms which best suited it. His stylistic preference was for aspecifically neo-Baroque functional-objective type of sound. This 3-volume critical edition with previously unpublished works includes the forewords of the first editions facsimiles a critical commentary for each volume as well as a list of sources. - First Urtext edition of Hugo Distler’s Organ works. - Includes previously unpublished works. - Reflects the latest state of research. - Detailed foreword critical commentary (Ger/Eng) facsimiles and tips on performance practice.

(+)
Orgelchoräle der Leipziger Handschrift-Volume 8 presents the important work group called the “Leipziger Chor?le.” Next to the late versions compiled and entered by Bach himself in the manuscript “P 271” all of the early versions with their sometimes widely divergent readings have also been edited here. The examination and evaluation of all relevant copies uncovered many a surprising new reading. Responsible for the new edition is the renowned organist and musicologist Jean-Claude Zehnder. An extensive introduction and highly commendable commentary round off this volume too. They also can be downloaded here. Next to a reliable musical text the highestimportance was placed once again on performance-practical aspects the results of which can be seen in the greater spaciousness for the notation and comfortable page turns. The enclosed CD-ROM contains more versions presented synoptically and for printing a facsimile of an early copy of BWV 664 and the English translation of the commentary.

(+)
Organ-The Prætorius-variationer dedicated to the organist Helge Gramstrup was composed by the Danish organist and composer Jesper Madsen (1957-1999). The work subtitled ‘Variations on a Motet by Michael Prætorius Højlovet være Kongen skøn 1609’ is his largest for Organ. The theme is presented in Prætorius’ own arrangement. Variation 1 has a rhapsodic improvisatory feel; Variation 2 that of a fast movement from a Bach Trio Sonata. Variation 3 is a slow siciliano and Variation 4’s wispy scherzando complements the meditative Variation 5. Variation 6 marked Finale starts majestically butsoon evolves into a French-style toccata with the melody on the pedal reeds. The work culminates in a triumphant arrangement of the original theme. A review in the July/August issue of Choir and Organ magazine calls this work 'very approachable' and a 'very useful recital piece although it's trickier than it looks.'
