The cantata O God, what glut of care and pain BWV 58, which Bach subtitled Dialogus and wrote for the Sunday after New Year, limits itself accordingly to the dialog couple consisting of soprano and bass; further soloists or a choir are not required. In the framing movements, the dialog takes on the form of a chorale arrangement: the soprano presents a cantus firmus whose words are consolingly commented on by the bass. Both the expansive chorale arrangements leave room for an aria which is framed by two recitatives. The cantata was composed for the Sunday after New Year 1727, but the received form is from a subsequent performance that took place six or seven years later. For this performance, Bach not only expanded the instrumentation but also replaced an entire aria. Later, he assigned the cantata to his annual cycle of chorale cantatas, probably due to its high proportion of chorales; this Sunday was missing in that annual cycle as there was no Sunday between New Year and Epiphany in 1725. Carus published the original version of Bruckner's Te Deum for soloists, choir and large orchestra (Carus 27.190) in the fall of 2015. In order to make this work available for performance by smaller-sized ensembles [und einem weiteren Benutzerkreis zuganglich zu machen] Carus now presents it in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ. The brass parts are orientated essentially towards those in Bruckner's orchestral version, while the organ part follows the original string parts. [Damit kann nun auch unter eingeschrankten Bedingungen dieses grossartige Werk in einer adaquaten, stimmigen Form zur Auffuhrung gebracht werden.] As the voice parts (soloists and choir) in this reduced version are identical with those of the original the vocal score and choral score of the latter version can be used. This work is available (in the original version) in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Shining rays stream from the 'Messe de sainte Cecile'. At first people were dazzled, then bewitched, then overcome. This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. In the Messe de sainte Cecile, Gounod combines sublime simplicity with operatic-dramatic elements and a colorful, effective orchestration. Critical edition in proven Carus quality. The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir. Brahms's Ave Maria was composed in 1858. The widely-held opinions in the literature on Brahms - that the work has justifiably been forgotten, the part-writing is monotonous and the style and diction is ponderous - don't do justice to a truly charming piece, based on folksong-like models. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4018000.

Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1036400.

The two organ concertos are marked by somewhat unusual instrumentation. Hector Berlioz warned about a certain antipathy between the organ and orchestral instruments, but with the use of three horns in op. 137 proves to be a fine piece of artistry: Rheinberger supplied tone colors which he had perceived the organ to lack. The trio version of the Suite op. 149 adds to the repertoire of sacred chamber music. Rheinberger's later addition to the work of an ad libitum string orchestra takes this Suite into the world of the triple concerto and the concerto grosso, without exactly corresponding to those genres.

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719000.

When Joseph Haydn assumed the position as music director of the Court of Esterhazy in 1766, following the death of his predecessor, Gregor Joseph Werner, he began by composing his first and most extensive Missa solemnis. The title Missa Cellensis (later also known as the Cecilian Mass) and the date of an autograph score suggest that this work was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for the 600th anniversary of the pilgrimage church Mariazell located in Styria. With regard to the scoring as well as form, this Mass is still in the tradition of the late baroque number mass. In contrast to previous mixed versions based on various sources, the new edition follows the authentic (original) version using the most reliable sources. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4060400.

The present publication finally closes the gap in the availability of the three church oratorios of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900). With this late work, which he considered his most important, Heinrich von Herzogenberg set the musical high point of the 15th Conference of the German Church Song Association in Strasbourg (1899), and also of his entire career. The celebration of the harvest provides an interesting look into the stylistic diversity of church music at the end of the 19th century, and shows the composer's aptitude for dramatic presentation in a special way. Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.
