Fantasy On A Theme Of Liszt was written in 1967 for a Cheltenham Festival concert. The theme which lies behind the work is the opening tune of Liszt's Faust Symphony, though this is never heard in its original form but is rather used as a thematic reservoir from which the music is derived. It is dedicated to the American composer and conductor Bernard Herrmann.

For Piano Solo. By Jianjun He. Synthesizing Western compositional techniques with Chinese musical elements, Fantasy for Piano shows the fusion of different cultures and the diversity of today's music. There are two main melodic ideas: one uses a whole-tone scale, somewhat related to the folk music of Ningxia, my home province in northwest China; the other, with its shifting major and minor thirds, shows a connection toWestern tonal music. The piece is roughly in three-part form: fast-slow-fast. Although the last part is derived from the first, each of the three has its own characteristics, while the entire piece is unified by the two melodic ideas described above. Fantasy for Piano is available on the VMM (Vienna Modern Masters) label recorded by Jeffrey Jacob.

The five Fantasy Pieces are manifestations of the piano in its sundry traditions. The Prelude is a response to the instrument's mechanical side and timbral possibilities; the Free Invention is a wild study in two-part counterpoint; the Intermezzo contains many dense harmonic textures; the Passacaglia is a demonstration of pianistic virtuosity, and the Postlude explores the instrument's resonance and acoustical properties.
