I became interested in the work of Plato through my friend and collaborator, the writer and philosopher Paul Woodruff. Paul's new translation, with Alexander Nehamas, of the Symposium gave me insights into ancient Greek ways of thinking about Love, Beauty, and Wisdom -- and managed to keep the earthy, and often bawdy side of it all in full view. But their new translation of Plato's later dialogue Phaedrus went even further: the beauty of the speeches is breathtaking, and the discourse itself is enough to keep one awake at night. Basically the Great Speech of Socrates in the Phaedrus dialogue has to do with the place of Eros in the world, and with the conflict in the soul between fleshly pleasure and philosophic discovery. I will not attempt to encapsulate this brilliant discourse in a program note: suffice it to say that reading it gave rise to my two-sided work for clarinet, violin, and piano, Phaedrus. The first movement represents the Philosophic life, and is thus subtitled Apollo's Lyre (Invocation and Hymn). It begins with an unaccompanied melody for the clarinet, which (after a pair of harp-like flourishes for the piano, expands into an accompanied canon. The voices in the dialogue (clarinet and violin) follow each other by a prescribed number of beats, but the music is totally devoid of any meter at all. The piano, representing the lyre, accompanies this lyric love-feast with repeated strummed chords. The canon has three large sections, and ends with violin echoing the unaccompanied clarinet invocation as the sound of the lyre fades. The second movement, called Dionysus' Dream-Orgy (Ritual Dance) presents, after a brief introduction, another kind of unmetered music. Rather than long lyric flights of philosophic song, however, this time we hear a unison dance of unbridled energy and sensual transport. The piece soon forms itself into a loose arch form, with contrasting metered dance sections divided by the unison unmetered orgy tune. Midway through the movement, Apollo's melody returns from the first movement, but it is a temporary reminiscence. The orgiastic dance returns, reaches a climax, and ends with a stomping of feet. While Plato asserts that a proper balance between lust and reason is necessary in all men, he (naturally) gives the nod to Philosophy as the better choice in which to live. Not so in my music: the two sides are meant to coexist and to complement each other. No sides are taken. Phaedrus was commissioned of the Verdehr Trio by Michigan State University. It is dedicated to the Vedehr Trio with great affection and admiration.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. There are passages in Nostalgia that build using two layers, a louder foreground and a quieter background. Both of these layers are independent of specific instruments, in other words, the various instruments jump in to play a role in either layer, then jump to the other layer. It is as if the ensemble has doubled. The technical musical term for multiple instruments interweaving to produce a single thread or idea is called Klangfarbenmelodie (tone-color-melody). Because there are two layers (louder and softer), both using this technique, Nostalgia is a unique example of 'double Klangfarbenmelodie.' The piece ends with a series of intense rhythmic pulsations and several apocalyptic fanfares. (From the performance notes.).

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. As the title suggests, the music is in a state of perpetual questioning using a variety of approaches. For example, Enigma opens using ostinati (plural of ostinato) that do not match in length, like a staircase with each step a different height. Additionally, the music has sudden starts and stops, again unexplained. There are dramatic and powerful explosive passages that are interrupted. The technique, used to create this feeling of a perplexed music world where things seem often not to make sense and to be left unresolved, is called in poetry and literature, anticlimax. In Enigma, the music suggests one direction; then refuses to continue, striking out in another direction. Artists use approaches such as this to force themselves into creative circumstances that they otherwise might not have discovered. (From the performance notes.).

In The Diamond Sutra, an early Buddhist text also known as The Diamond that Cuts Through Illusion, the Buddha leads his interlocutor, the Elder Subhuti, through a series of questions and provocations. The Buddha then concludes the session by offering this teaching to those assembled:All composed things are like a dream,a phantom, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning. That is how to meditate on them;that is how to observe them. This duo piece is in four sections, corresponding roughly to these four disparate visions of impermanence: four distinct moments of interplay between form and emptiness, four corners of a diamond. This series of images is itself a 'composed thing,' gathering dissimilar elements into a unified system. It suggests that the things we make are similar to things that exist beyond intention. The Buddha's utterance helps us hear so-called 'composition' and 'improvisation' - or the encompassing category, 'music' - as part of an even larger aggregate: that which forms and recedes.- Vijay Iyer.

The three movements examine the same materials from different points of view; in the first, the ideas are chronologically separated, but they alternate and develop through the instruments in an intensifying way that generates a rather imposing and grandiose rhetoric. The second, with its hypnoti, incessant reiterations at maximum volume of a simultaneous combination of motives of different l lengths and shapes, ends just short of becoming unbearable... In the last movement the flute, clarinet and violin slowly unfold a continuous texture that combines several of the earlier elements, while the piano softly interjects the echo of its first movement triplets.

Percy Grainger's (1882-1961) love for music of the simple rural folk of the British Isles led to a series of forty-three pieces that he grouped into a series called British Folk-Music Settings, including Molly on the Shore, Irish Reel from British Folk Music Settings, No. 1. Grainger produced at least six versions of this folk tune arrangement of two contrasting Irish Reels (Temple Hill and Molly on the Shore, from The Complete Petrie Collection of Ancient Irish Music), starting with the original 1907 version for string quartet or string orchestra. That same year, Grainger also produced a version for violin solo and piano, which is also available from the publisher. This wholly unique version was freely arranged for violin and piano by famous early 20th century violinist Fritz Kreisler, offering players already familiar with Grainger's original rendition an opportunity to approach the music in a different way. Whereas Nono considered the world to be only fragmentarily analyzable, so-called consumer capitalism increasingly intrudes upon ego structures, by fragmenting them to the point of: assumed insufficiency, i.e., was consumption a form of infiltration?, or: in television you can see models licking face cream because it's so rich etc. (retranslated), as Meredith Haaf cited in her book review (SZ / 23.05.2016 Alexandra Kleeman: You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine) , and to the point of similar perfection-senselessness. Music doesn't do things by halves. Even when events or notes are puffed up, they can retain elegance and significance. Other ego amplitudes are of violinistic nature or are favourite memories - Paganini's Capricci, Stockhausen's Studie I, Steve Reich, the tone C and similar things. The craziest egos are quantums, because at no time are they identical with themselves. They can entangle and superpose, are nonlocal, etc. Although the sound character in this Duo is fairly open, I believe I succeeded in making probability waves of harmonic stopovers perceptible. This means hearing without analyzing and without constantly measuring. Nonlocality - without messenger particles - means no harmonic steps, but with the capacity to interact. (Nicolaus A. Huber, May 2016)World premiere: Toronto, November 17, 2016 Written for the Duo Wapiti (Genevieve Liboiron, Daniel Anez).

Eotvos wrote this piece in memory of the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003. The number 7 determines the musical, rhythmic and formal structure of the work: 49 musicians are divided into seven groups, and as well as the solo violin there are six further violins arranged correspondingly around the hall; and the solo violin itself portrays each of the astronauts and their different origin, from America via Israel to India, in folkloristically tinged cadenzas.'The violin concerto Seven is a very personal monologue and the musical expression of my sympathy towards the seven astronauts who lost their lives while exploring space in fulfilment of a fundamental dream of mankind.' Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was paid three guineas for the publishing rights to his Suite de Pièces by Schott & Co. London on 24 December 1892 when the composer was just 17 years old. In the following year the work was published by Schott Music's German office in versions for both violin with piano and violin with organ. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognized as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on eleven occasions. Like many works, at some point in the past Suite de Pièces became out of print. Schott Music is very proud to present this new modern performing edition of the version for violin and piano. Errors and inconsistencies from the first edition have now been corrected.

It is a work for violin and piano inspired directly by Paganini's Capriccio No. 13, known as La risata del diavolo and one of the most renowned capriccios from the series of twenty-four composed by the celebrated Genovese violinist and composer. In my version for violin and piano, I have singled out the two essential features of the work: the third notes on a double string that emulate the devil's laughter, and the quick eighth notes that follow, all of it within a light and humorous chromaticism.Il diavolo begins with a slow and fragmented but suggestive violin cadenza. It then follows the Allegro deciso, built on the two features mentioned above. In the central part, yet another violin cadenza of a similar character but which recalls the devil's laughter more evidently. The Allegro deciso goes on up to a carefree and virtuosic finale. The work is dedicated to violinist Jesus Reina.

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op.103 was written in 1958 and is yet another superb orchestral work by Edmund Rubbra. Typically, this is a work that calls more on musicality than on virtuosity, although Rubbra knewthe violin well for having long partnered his wife and for having long played in a trio with William Pleeth. Rubbra's familiarity with the instrument certainly helped him avoiding technical ‘tricks’ and concentrating his creativeenergies more on an inward-looking solo part than an outward-dashing virtuosic one! This is an arrangement for Solo Violin with Piano Accompaniment. The solo violin part is also included on a separate insert.

“I belong to that group of people who appropriate Debussy's wonderfully formulated philosophy according to which music begins where words end. Contrary to a view that has become widespread during the past 100 years, I am convinced that the task of the composer is to write music, not to talk about it. Even if my technical and aesthetic commentaries on one of my compositions were to have a certain value for listeners, such a commentary would have the effect that I were more or less forcing my own vision of the work onto the listener. The power of music is, however, a gift that makes it capable of calling forth different reactions in listeners. I shall therefore limit myself to saying that the 'Imaginary Variations' were inspired by the wonderful recordings of Janet Packer that I listened to with the greatest pleasure prior to the beginning of my work. The title is derived from the fact that this composition is structured similarly to the classical variation form and that the audience can listen to the constant changes of the musical ideas. In truth, however, the twelve short sections of the work are not true variations even though they reveal some connections and similarities.†(Krzysztof Meyer).

Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) was a pupil of Max Reger.Beginning with an expressive violin theme in a densely packed, 'Brahms-like' piano setting, the classical four-movement work centres around two capricious and playful movements: Lustig, nicht zu schnell is how the second movement begins, a fugal gem working with all kinds of contrapuntal tricks. This is followed by a scherzo-like, wittily flirting Rasch. The finale begins with a melodically simple tune in an almost folksong-like tone which, by a sequence of character variations, builds to a grand gesture which eventually leads back to the initial cantabile - with the sonata coming to a quiet end. A valuable addition to the chamber music repertoire.

The operas of Marius Felix Lange, especially “Snow White,†“The Canterville Ghost,†“Die Schneekönigin,†“Das Opernschiff oder Am Südpol, denkt man, ist es heisse†have been incredibly successful. Many of his operas have also been performed on foreign stages, including those in Switzerland and France. Other points of emphasis in Lange's work include orchestral compositions and Lieder. The American violinist Hilary Hahn had an unusual yet very clever idea in 2012 when she requested encore pieces from present-day composers. The cycle “In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores†were consecutively premiered by the violinist until the end of the 2012/13 season and recorded on CD. Amongst the submissions selected by Hilary Hahn during the course of an online contest, Marius Felix Lange's violin piece “Nutcracker's Nightmare†immediately ended up amongst the ten best-placed works. The title “Nutcracker's Nightmare†recalls E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous fairytale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,†the gloomily imaginative story in which a wooden toy is awakened to life and has to fight against the powers of darkness.

“Virtuoso piece in the style of a Hungarian Rhapsody†– thus reads Ravel's entry on “Tzigane†in the so-called “Autobiographical Sketch.†Composed in 1924, there are three versions of this work: with piano, with orchestra and with luthéal, a device for keyboard instruments to extend the timbre. “Tzigane†was inspired by the Hungarian-English violinist Jelly d'Aranyl, to whom Ravel had already promised a virtuoso piece in 1922 following Franz Liszt's “Hungarian Rhapsodies.†Work progressed slowly and d'Aranyl only received the music four days before the première – but she still gave a brilliant performance.

Note by the composer:“This piece was written in 2006 (for violoncello and piano) for an exhibition dedicated to artists suffering from schizophrenia. Thebasis of the piece is a sequence of four chords, very simple and minimalistic. A person with schizophrenia hears voices that can be very disturbing; there is a longing for silence. I wrote this piece so that my son Alex, who suffers from the illness, could hear silence and meditation from it. It's called Blue Silence because blue is sometimes associated with healing.†Elena Kats-Chernin.

'Songs Without Words' - that's what Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) called his lyrical piano pieces, romantic miniatures in which the composer wanted to 'sing' on the keyboard instrument. With them, he invented an entirely new form of chamber music playing in the 19th century. These 'Songs' are also perfectly suitable for duet playing: for a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment. The 'Song Without Words' Op 30/3 is a rewarding lyrical solo piece.

The Scherzo is a movement by Felix Mendelssohn from the incidental music to the play by William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The play inspired Mendelssohn to compose the music because it was a childhood favorite. There are two works by Mendelssohn called A Midsummer Night's Dream; the Overture composed in 1826 and the Incidental Music added in 1842. The Scherzo was originally scored for orchestra. The brilliant transcription for violin and piano is by Willy Burmester.

Black Cat - behind the title, one may rightly assume an allusion to the composer's surname, which comes from the Russian language. Elena Kats-Chernin indulges her passion for ragtime and tango in this ironically nostalgic miniature. The customers of the famous Parisian Belle Époque cabaret “Le Chat Noir†would have been pleased! The sensual mewing of the black cat is expressed in the portamenti of the violin part, even better than in the version for piano solo (BB3434), which is available as well.

I wrote the first movement of my Sommersonate in the summer of 2010, and though a self-contained work, it called out for continuation or a companion piece. I imagine the first movement, marked moderato, to be bright, free, weightless, transparent, flooded in sunlight. In contrast, the newly composed second movement is nocturnal and cryptic, with a restrained glow. A Romance, a (summer) night piece. Jorg Widmann.
