Written in 1972, while Ewazen was pursuing undergraduate studies at Eastman, the Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Piano is his first foray into the 20th-century American tonal music that he first embraced at that time. Composed for a classmate and proficient cellist, Julie Charland, the Sonata is in three movements, the second of which is quite demanding of virtuosity. (Manuscript).

A commission from the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra completed in 2003 and premiered in December 2004. This is music constructed in broad arches culminating in shamanistic rhythms in the closing movement. Lasting 40 minutes, it is Vuori's biggest work and rests on two simple kernels. In his striving to develop his material he confesses to be a Sibelian symphonist.

Trombonists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire.

The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Here is a description of this beautiful work by the composer: Reflection and Celebration for 8-part Trombone Ensemble is a musical homage to a man who was revered for his mentorship, musical intellect and delightful humor. The work opens with a somber melodic solo, capturing the noble spirit of this great mentor. Several repetitive 5-note ascending motives follow which is a symbolic reference to students learning and accomplishing under Conklin's mentorship. The bold fanfare style (in measure 32) is presented to capture the presence and tall stature of Conklin. Finally, Conklin's down-to-earth personality and his infectious humor is referenced (in measure 83). Even the fanfare theme returns in a faster tempo, thus highlighting the frivolity, lightheartedness, and wisdom of this adored music teacher. The music is about 6 1/2 minutes in length and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Jimbo's Lullaby is the second in a series of six pieces from Debussy's Children's Corner Suite. They are simple in style & light in character. The work is a depiction of a lullaby sung to a stuffed Elephant. This little gem of 3 1/2 minutes has been beautifully edited for advanced performers by Ralph Sauer for four Trombones. The bottom part, which features a great Elephant style solo, can be performed on Tuba, Contrabass or Bass Trombone.
