Composed in the late period, around 1740 A lively discussion about the choral movement Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft has been carried on, in which not only all previous assumptions have been called into question-including Bach's authorship-but also show how little we know about the history of this magnificent movement. Even though there is little to refute the 1982 presumption that the work was handed down in the form of an arrangement, the question remains open concerning the identity of the arranger, as well as the alleged form of the original design. Therefore it seemed appropriate to forego any attempts at reconstruction. Rather, for the present new edition the music has been critically examined and commented upon based on the surviving copy from Bach's circle.

It seems likely that the composition of this work was connected with a penitential service held in the Marienkirche in Muhlhausen to commemorate the disastrous fire which had destroyed large parts of the town on the 29th May 1707, but it has not been possible to discover documentary evidence to prove the correctness of this supposition. The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Score available separately - see item CA.3118600.

A joyful dispute of the gods is how Johann Sebastian Bach's librettist Salomon Franck described the Birthday Cantata for the court of Saxony-Weissenfels, now generally known as the Hunting Cantata BWV 208. The work was probably first performed with the composer present on 23 February 1713, Duke Christian's 31st birthday. On that occasion the choir may have numbered just four soloists, but it can of course be larger. Bach also went on to perform this colorful and varied work, comprising 15 short movements, several times. As the cantata begins with a recitative, there is an opportunity to precede it with an instrumental movement. A suitable piece is the opening movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046 with its hunting horn sounds, which Bach also used later in other works such as the church cantata BWV 52. The edition includes this movement from BWV 1046a (the oldest version) as a performance suggestion.

A CD that includes four great works by Franco Cesarini performed by the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano under the direction of the Maestro. Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor BWV 582 In Franco CesariniÂ’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeittinged with late-Romanticism. A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach superbly arranged for wind orchestra. Sinfonietta No. 3 “Zwölfmalgreien Sketchesâ€, Op. 56 In composing the Sinfonietta No. 3 , Franco Cesarini was inspired by the history of the municipality of Zwölfmalgreien, made up of various towns, villages and scattered districts which were incorporated to the City of Bolzano (Italy) over one hundred years ago. The peculiarity of these places, different from each other, but all characterized by rare beauty, have contributed to create this 3-mouvement work (City Life, Mountain Shadows and Classic Wineyards), which translates into music the activities of the villages, the winter days and the lively atmosphere in the wine regions. A perfect trip to this wonderful part of Italy! Suite Siciliana, Op. 57b The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada , Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola , Tambourin , Sicilianaand Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colorful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the “pupiâ€, which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion into ancient traditions of this beautiful island! Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, Op. 55 Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how was born Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapes†, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements - The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon , Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gate - which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. Symphony No. 3 “Urban Landscapesâ€, a sumptuous musical portrait of the “Windy Cityâ€. Bach composed the cantata Stay with us, for it draws on toward evening BWV 6 for Easter Monday 1725. In fact, it is certain that a chorale cantata had been planned for that feast day, but for some unknown reason, the annual cycle of chorale cantatas broke off just before Easter 1725. For BWV 6, Bach fell back on a text by an author whose texts he had already set numerous times in his first Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas (which are conspicuous by their ever constant structure and use of two chorale settings). From the gospel for Easter Monday, the story of the Emmaus disciples, only the disappearing daylight and the fear of being left alone are made the subject of discussion. A truly magnificent choral movement opens the cantata. The first chorale for soprano and violoncello piccolo, which Bach later included in his Schubler-Chorale, is also well-known outside of the cantata. The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3117400.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Gott ist unsre Zuversicht BWV 197 was probably written in the second half of the 1730s for a wedding, no further details of which are known. In the opening chorus in particular, it features quite a sizeable orchestra. The text of the cantata has one major theme - trust in God! In a magnificent lullaby (movement 3) all cares are sung to sleep. The other arias, with their exceptionally exquisite combinations of scorings, make the cantata into a quite special work, albeit one which is associated with a particular occasion. The wedding cantata BWV 197 draws on older material for some of its movements. Two movements are parodies on arias from the incomplete surviving Christmas cantata Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe, BWV 197a, including the lullaby O du angenehmes Paar, of which only the last quarter survives from the Christmas cantata - it is O du angenehmer Schatz there. By using the later version, Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the original version of this dreamlike beautiful movement; however, the complete Christmas cantata cannot be reconstructed from the sources. The Peasant Cantata BWV 212 is unique in Bach's cantata output both in content and musically. Although it belongs to Bach's homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes. Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less 'academic' than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musicians' abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Picander's humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far beyond its original purpose. The cantata Es ist euch gut, dass ich hingehe [It is well that I go forth] BWV 108 for Cantate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The text contains two sayings by Jesus which are taken directly from the Sunday gospel reading (John 16:5-15). The quotation opening the cantata was set by Bach as a bass aria with solo oboe d'amore; it breathes tranquility and assurance. The second quotation, however, is set as an extended choral fugue in three sections; it forms the center of the cantata. The free text surrounding the biblical quotations is divided into two arias in which the emphasis is on melodic lines; there is only one single recitative, the original text of which was substantially abridged by Bach. A four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110800.

None other than Johann Sebastian Bach arranged Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s well-known Stabat Mater for performances at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. Bach replaced the old liturgical sequence of the original with a rhymed version in German of the 51st Psalm, Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden (God, annull all my transgression) (available from Carus under Carus 35.302).Both Pergolesi’s composition and Bach’s arrangement have only two solo vocal parts (soprano and alto). As early as the 18th century, the tradition developed of performing individual movements of the Stabat mater chorally, since some movements literally demand a choir. The presented edition now also offers this possibility for Bach’s version Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden. Jörn Bartels has created choral versions for verses 3, 5-7 and 10-15 by adding male voices based on the basso continuo as well as Bach’s original viola part.- Bach's adaptation of the poignant Stabat Mater by Pergolesi- Suitable for small choirs and ensembles. The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score available separately - see item CA.3111700.
