Between Beethoven and Brahms, a long neglected workSchumann's last work for solo instrument and orchestra was not given its premiere until 1937, at which time it was also released in an editorially inadequate version. A re-evaluation of Schumann's late oeuvre began in the 1980s, in the wake of which the missing link between the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms (Yehudi Menuhin) also drew increasing attention. Since then, those in the know have come to appreciate the work, whose unique musical and technical demands challenge for both interpreter and listener. This new edition of what is perhaps the most underestimated masterpiece of the Romantic era is the first meticulously prepared Urtext edition of the score. Nothing short of incredible is the fact that the composer's own piano reduction from which Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim played the piece is being published here for the first time! Thomas Zehetmair, who has significantly contributed to the re-assessment of the concerto, assumed the task of providing a sound technical basis to his revision of the solo part.Perhaps this edition will help stimulate awareness and appreciation of this unjustly forgotten romantic violin concerto described by Menuhin as the missing link between the concertos by Beethoven to Brahms. (John Thomson, Stringendo)Schumann's last work for solo instrument and orchestra was not given its premiere until 1937. This new edition is the first meticulously prepared Urtext edition of the score and the composer's own piano reduction - from which Clara played the piece!

This is a sequel to the highly successful Child Prodigy Composers volume. In this second volume, the majority of the pieces are works recommended for pupils in the upper music school classes, and indeed some can be used successfully in secondary level teaching as well. Here too, most of the compositions were written before the age of 14 - it is amazing what highly developed piano technique some of these young composers already possessed at the age of 13 or 14!In addition to Muzio Clementi's A flat Major Sonata, the Allemandes by Carl Maria von Weber, Schubert's surprisingly mature C minor fantasia, the prodigiously talented Clara Schumann's two polonaises, Mussorgsky'sbrilliant polka, a sensitive waltz by Scriabin and Borodin's showy (but not difficult) four-hand polka, this volume also contains works by a Hungarian composer: the hitherto unpublished mazurkas by Ern Dohnányi, written around ages 11-12.

Clara Schumann (née Wieck) was undoubtedly the most important female pianist of the 19th century. As a young child she toured Europe as a prodigy: her entire career as a celebrated piano virtuoso spanned more than 60 years. Equally important, but less well known, is the composer Clara Schumann, who published her Opus 1 at the age of eleven. Despite the domestic duties expected of a woman at that time, she created numerous outstanding piano works and songs that are at least the equal of those of her male contemporaries. However, society at that time did not allow women to be regarded as fully-fledged composers or for their works to be appreciated adequately. To help give this important composer the recognition she deserves, Edition Peters, in collaboration with the Schumann-Haus Leipzig, is now, on the occasion of her 200th birthday, publishing this Anniversary Songbook for Medium-Low Voice. The 14 songs, representing the pinnacle of Clara's art, were composed mainly in the period after her marriage in Leipzig to Robert Schumann - who was her greatest champion. This volume includes:

Clara Schumann (1819-1896), then Clara Wieck, wrote this collection of six Soirées musicales in 1835-1836, when she 16 or 17 years old. Reflecting the influence of Mendelssohn and Chopin, each melodic piece shows her clear understanding of the formal and harmonic tendencies of those two master composers. Her later husband Robert Schumann would say of Clara's Soirées musicales as boasting a wealth of unconventional resources, an ability to entangle the secret, more deeply twisting threads and then to unravel them. Movements: 1. Toccatina, 2. Notturno, 3. Mazurka in G minor, 4. Ballade, 5. Mazurka in G major, 6. Polonaise.
