It only became apparent a few years ago that the text of the soprano cantata Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht came from the collection Gott-geheiligten Sabbaths-Zehnden by the Leipzig theology student and Bach pupil Christoph Birkmann, printed in 1728 in Nuremberg. Birkmann was probably therefore the author of the text. The cantata was written for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 24 November 1726 in the year of its first performance. As in other cantatas in the first annual cycle, Bach chose an instrumental sinfonia as the opening movement - here the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto. The soprano soloist has two recitatives and two arias, in which the falsehood of the world is juxtaposed with trust in God. The cantata text is rounded off with the first verse of the chorale In dich hab ich gehoffet, scored for four-part chorus, as is usual with Bach. With the use of two horns and three oboes added to the string ensemble, the cantata has colorful and varied orchestration. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105200.

During Mendelssohns years of study with Zelter, the arrangement of chorales already played an important role, and he continued to be occupied with the protestant chorale throughout his symphonic and oratorical work. The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists. Invictus: A Passion addresses one of the worldââ¬â¢s most powerful stories through the lens of the modern world. The texts, written or inspired by women, describe not only human suffering and persecution but also the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. Composer Howard Goodall is uniquely suited to bring these texts to life with music of emotional clarity and sweeping force. This excerpt is scored for SATB (divisi) choir and piano. A text by Ãâ melia Lanyer (née Bassano) (ââ¬ÅWhy should unlawful actions use the Light?ââ¬Â) is set as a homophonic chorale with a supportive accompaniment. Duration 3:32.

Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!

The new edition of BWV 118 presents the work in the two different instrumental settings that are authenticated through the autograph scores: the earlier version with solely brass instruments, and the later one with mixed instruments. Both versions are printed consecutively. Of particular interest for an authentic performance are two Litui, which are called for in both versions. To this day it has been impossible to determine what instruments are meant here: high horns in B flat? Or trumpets? The work has more unanswered questions for us for example, the occasion for which the first version was written in ca. 1736/37, and the reason why the work was newly orchestrated after 1740.The new edition of BWV 118 presents the work in the two different instrumental settings that are authenticated through the autograph scores: the earlier version with solely brass instruments, and the later one with mixed instruments.

With the edition of the Christmas Oratorio within the framework of the Stuttgart Bach Editions, Carus presents a scholarly edition for practical performance. The basis for this publication are Bach's autograph score and the original parts. The conducting score contains an appendix with a concise Critical Report which provides information about the sources and their readings; when necessary, the latter are discussed in more detail, especially with regard to how the editor arrived at solutions for questions of articulation which differ from those found in previous editions. The representative, clothbound volume is supplemented by a study score as well as a choral score, a vocal score and complete orchestral material. In the orchestral material short excerpts containing the conclusions of the secco recitatives are rendered with cue notes in separate vocal systems printed above the score where the instrumentalists pause, thus enabling them make their entrances in the movements which follow these recitatives. This work is also available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124800.

This volume contains mainly transcriptions, the majority of them from four-part choral works, these transcriptions have been prepared by the highly experienced teacher of brass instruments, Péter Perényi. In compiling the collection he was helped by his own music school pupils, who played through a large mass of material and selected the pieces they liked best. The pieces can be played on two trumpets and two trombones (or two tenor horns), the trombone parts avoid the seventh position throughout.
